Display pics of my contacts

hello @ all 🙂
I have a question kind of curious for me. And the question is – does anybody know how long display pics of my contacts will be showing up after they and/or me has gone off-line ? And from what it depends ?
I still don’t get it completely, but e.g. some time ago i was able to see pic of one of my contact during for a few days though that person wasn’t online these days… and the next example is : contact was online one day ago, but today contact’s pic isn’t showing up.

*questioned a lot* lol

Which version of Messenger do you use?
The current v8.1 seems to retain the contacts Display Pictures in the contact card/conversation window permanently it seems, but the picture doesnt seem to update if the contact changes it and you do not see them online after the change.
