Yup. That’s it. And if you want to change the group they’re in, just right click them and select “edit buddy”.
And, yes, only if the buddy is online.
Well, I don’t know if this is the simplest way or not, but you can give this a try:
Open up AIM > View > Offline Buddies > Show In Groups
They will still appear offline, but they are enabled to arrangements.

airtas, from the Settings window, click the Expressions tab. There should be an image of your current buddy icon. To set it, click Browse…
After I click browse, my client allows me to browse my computer for a buddy icon… I am using version 7.0.3.17, but I remember AIM 6 behaving the same way.

is there a way to get a photo to the left of your user name were the shaded shadow is?
There should be a mini version of your buddy icon there automatically, perhaps after exchanging a few test IMs with your own screen name.
