ParticipantI can’t remember if I got it from spinach or Taco Bell though….

Har har, well okay, so I got a cute plush version of E. coli from Giant Microbes.com, but I still got E. coli! :p
The little bugger has been in the news quite a bit lately, giving us Food Scientists something to talk about. But I’m curious on what non food people think about E. coli outbreaks. Let’s hear it…have any of y’all ever suffered at the hands of E. coli? Did you throw out all of your spinach? Etc…?

KeymasterYou had me there for a minute, Doc! 🙂
You’re such a science geek, and I mean that in the best way.
To answer your question, no, I haven’t thrown out any food as a result of the outbreaks. Is it strange to have more E. coli outbreaks though? Or is it something that’s always happened, and we’re just getting better at diagnosing and reporting it?

MemberWell, I’d be jobless if there was no e.coli (or risk thereof) – as I work in a small water testing lab – where we test the whole city’s water quality daily (among other stuff).

MemberI wasn’t really taking this too seriously… E. coli…?
I almost laughed when I was watching T.V. a couple of days ago when the president of Taco Bell came on. “Taco Bell food is ABSOLUTELY SAFE to eat, and we look forward to serving you.”*Didn’t stop eating spinach or restrict Taco Bell intake* 😉

Memberi dont really eat spinach that often, unless it is in dip. but i did get scared of taco bell b/c they closed all of them in philadelphia and the philly suburbs…but now taco bell is saying the e. coli isn’t from the green peppers, they think it is the lettuce.

MemberI’ve noticed that the sales (I work at a grocery store) of spinach went up when the whole outbreak began. It really makes you wonder if people even knew about it or if they had the mentality of “Its not going to happen to me.”

MemberMy mom’s a vegan, and spinach is pretty much half of what she eats… All you have to do is wash it thoroughly, she’s been eating it for months and she’s fine.

That’s a good question Jeff. For the most part, food borne illnesses go under reported, mainly because people get over the illness pretty quickly. Even e.coli isn’t all that serious, unless it is the dreaded EHEC. I once fell victim to “food poisening” and it was difficult to pinpoint exactly what food caused it.
I am thinking that your idea that E. coli has always been a problem, but we are getting better at diagnosing/reporting it is correct. The whole system is automated now, which is an improvement to how it used to be done.
