Participant“ELIZA emulates a Rogerian psychotherapist.
ELIZA has almost no intelligence whatsoever, only tricks like string substitution and canned responses based on keywords. Yet when the original ELIZA first appeared in the 60’s, some people actually mistook her for human. The illusion of intelligence works best, however, if you limit your conversation to talking about yourself and your life.”
In practice, due to the simplistic algorithms used, it’s most often a frusterating experience. 😀 So now it’s probably for a good laugh and nothing more.
“Eliza can either cure your psychosis or generate new ones depending on how you take it.”
Anyway, you can toy with it here:

You can also download a DOS version here:

Here is a screenshot of the downloadable version 😀 :

Oh yeah, and feel free to post any funny conversations you had!

MemberWhat a wasteful bot to talk to. 🙂 The bot didn’t do what a real-live psychotherapist is supposed to do. I know it is just a bot with limited grammars done by the author. 🙂

ParticipantLike I said, the bot was never a real success. But it’s pretty much just for laughs now.

MemberWhen we had our Radio Shack computer when I was a toddler we had Eliza, I remember I could only use it when my older sisters were around because no one wanted me to hurt the CASSETTE TAPES [:O]. I must have been 4 when our cousins (who were even older than my sisters) came to visit and I REALLY wanted to use the computer, so they let me “Ask Eliza” (that’s what it was called) something…they made me ask what a “fart” was and then showed my parents and blamed it on me. It didn’t reall work though, because I could barely write then, much less construct a sentence on a PC. And just for the record, ELIZA didn’t know what a “fart” was.
