ParticipantI have been wanting to get one of these.
The other night I was at Best Buy, where they had a few of these, but most of them were pretty expensive, which I guess should be unsurprising, but the cheapest I could find there was by Maxtor, which was $99.99 and had an 80GB storage capacity. I looked up that very same one on the internet, and I read one or two bad reviews about it dying after a few weeks. So I’m not sure if I want to buy from Maxtor. Seagate looks pretty good however, but I haven’t found a cheaper one yet. So what do you think is the best/most reliable brand?
Just if you might know a good one for me: I don’t want to pay more than 100 big ones for it, and I want one that has at least 40 or 50 GB, that uses preferably USB 2.0(though I think about all of them use this now). So, I’m not looking for one of those small servers with 300GB. I just want something small and simple, that has enough that I can put virtually anything on it. I don’t want one of those little flash drives that you put on a keychain, either. 🙂
TigerDirect has a lot of good stuff there you can buy for cheap, so I decided to look there. Here is a list of their best selling external hard drives. What would you recommend I get? Which brands are the best?

Participanti’ve never had any problems with Seagate. My last computer had a Seagate 120gb drive in it, never had any trouble with it. Right now I’ve got a Maxtor internal 20gb harddrive sitting in an external enclosure (poor man’s solution to an external drive), and I haven’t had any problems with it yet.
they have an option to sort by price, you can try looking at the few they have available for less than $100… seem to all be 80gb drives.
there’s also eBay…

MemberYou’ll find some great deals @ Newegg.com. Check there. I’ve heard good reviews of the seagate as well, I’d look into that or LaCie (but they can be expensive). Well good luck!

ParticipantCool. I might just get that one from Maxtor. After all, it was just one bad review that discouraged me.
As for buying online, I’m not sure. Would I want to just go to the store to get it, and pay tax? or would I try to bid on a cheaper one on ebay, but then pay the shipping and wait weeks for it to come (If I won)? I think I would rather get it from the store.

MemberI’ve had bad luck with all 4 maxtor drives I’ve ever owned (4 of 4 failuer rate). One died within a week, and the other 3 all died at different times. I have 2 250gig Maxtors that I sent in for warranty work, but I’m going to sell them. Maxtor had a bad reputation (among myself and other computer geeks) a few years ago, and so did IBM for their one line…the 75GX or something? My one IBM drive is still going strong, but that was an OEM drive. I’ll never buy an IBM/Hitachi or Maxtor drive voluntarily, they’ve just been what I got with a system or was given by a friend. My Western Digital drives (5 that I can think of over the past 7 years) have never failed on me. WD is great, and Seagate is greater. Seagate has always been one of the most reliable (though I’ve never personally owned one), and they offer a 5 year warranty on all their drives I’ve seen. WD has a 3 year on all 8mb cache drives and 5 years on their Raptor drives (I think).
SO, I vote Seagate if you want to put all your faith into reliability, and if you want to save some dough go Western Digital. All the computers I’ve built for myself/friends/family have WD in them and haven’t failed yet in the past 3 years 🙂
EDIT: did some reading really quickly and found a $130 (+free 2day fedex shipping) WD 120gig 7200 rpm USB 2.0 drive. BUT, the warranty is for one year. I guess they don’t offer longer warranties on external drives because they assume that the drives will be moving much more frequently than an internal drive.

ParticipantThanks, Jon!
Today I walked down to Target and they had a Western Digital 120GB external hard drive for only $99.99, so… I bought it. And I am transferring files to it as I type this. Transfer speed is pretty dang fast, I hope this thing lasts me for a while. 🙂 Again, thank you.
