ParticipantDid you know that there’s a World Cup going on these days in Japan, in BASKETBALL? 😉 Just like in soccer, each 4 years the biggest basketball event is here to entertain us and watch some good, exciting b-ball from the National teams.
Too bad I hadn’t created a thread earlier for this, the tournament has now reached the quarter finals with some really exciting matches ahead with powerful teams. So i’ll just post the remaining matches.
USA is here, not even close to that Dream Team of course, but they seem to have made a quite powerful team again.
Greece is here as well though, the holders of the European Championship last year 😉 So we come out pretty strong.
Today’s results:
USA – AUSTRALIA 113-73
GREECE – CHINA 95-64
TURKEY – SLOVENIA 90-84
ARGENTINA – NEW ZEALAND 79-62
ITALY – LITHUANIA 68-71
SPAIN – SERBIA & MONTENEGRO 87-75
GERMANY – NIGERIA 78-77
FRANCE – ANGOLA 68-62Which brings us to the quarter finals pairs:
USA – GERMANY
GREECE – FRANCEARGENTINA – TURKEY
SPAIN – LITHUANIAFor semifinals I predict it’ll be:
Greece – Usa and Argentina – SpainCan’t wait for it!

Oh and, go here to get all the information you need about the tournament so far:

ParticipantGeez, princeG – if it wasn’t for you, I’d never know about all these world sporting events. After looking at the stats and stuff, I agree with your finals picks, but have a soft spot in my heart for Lithuania, so I’ll be rooting for them against Spain.
Thanks for the post, and keeping us up-to-date on sports around this Big Blue Ball. 🙂

ParticipantOh, my heart is breaking :crying: they didn’t stand a chance against Spain. I guess I’ll have to choose a new team to root for . . . oh, that would be USA.

ParticipantAnd YES! I was 100% right in my predictions:
GREECE – FRANCE 73-56
USA – GERMANY 86-56The two semifinals:GREECE – USA
ARGENTINA – SPAINOh we aint gonna be an easy opponent for the Americans that’s for sure:cool:August 30, 2006 at 6:34 pm #151322PolarBearNPR
ParticipantAwwww – we’re just baiting you . . . making you think it’s gonna be an easy win, but we will triumph. You’ll see – USA is gonna hammer Greece.
(I’ve been waiting to use that smiley)But how about the other match – who do you like, Argentina or Spain?
All joking aside, I think it’s great that these events bring together folks from all over the world to celebrate their national athletes/teams in the spirit of competition.

ParticipantAwww – now I don’t think six points merits a double-hammering, but, if anyone had to beat us, I’m glad it’s Greece – really good team there. And as long as everyone played their best, and had a good time, it’s all good. 🙂
Here’s the story from the AP.
Sorry, don’t get the 101 Dalmations reference

MemberDid any of you guys see how bad the refs were in todays game for USA vs. Greece? I can’t believe it… it’s just terrible how the United States gets screwed in every game. The USA is lucky to even have won any games because every game the played this Summer was 5 vs. 7 guys because the two refs were on the opponents side. Anyway, I still think that the United States has superior athletes compared to Greece. If the US would play by our rules then every game would be a blow out. HAHHAHHA

HAHHAHHAI think you’re living in another world mate, I suppose it IS too tough to handle that defeat isnt it.. from a supposedly weaker team. But that’s life, sometimes good things come to an end, and a better opponent rises and then you find excuses in referees and so on. Welcome to the real basketball, nba is not the only bball in the world. You guys play only for the showtime but there is NO substance.. That’s what Greece has. Just admit it we were a better team yesterday and we won fairly, and take Polarbear’s example that knows how to recognise a good team and a good game. Oh and, just read what the players and the coach of your national team said. You guys have very good players individually..but NOT as a team. So you must be the only American that talks about referees “HAHAHAHA”
The whole country went out out to celebrate and we’re preparing, and hoping, for a new triumph in tomorrow’s big final:
GREECE – SPAINGO GREEEEEEEEECE, just one more step to climb on top of the world!!!!!

Participant“Darius Lavrinovic scored 18 points to lead Lithuania to a 77-62 victory over Germany in the seventh-place game Sunday, matching its best finish in a FIBA world championships.”
Yay Lithuania! Great job!

Keymaster“Spain won its first world championship without its star in a performance worthy of a Hollywood script.
With the injured Gasol cheering from the bench, Spain beat Greece 70-47 Sunday night in an emotional victory some thought couldn’t happen and few thought would be so easy. “
