MemberIs there any way that I can find the owner of an AIM screenname?
My daughter and some of her friends are being harrassed at least once a week by someone. Can I ping their IP or is there any way I can find out who this is to put a stop to it?
Thanks for any advice.

MemberI would suggest, if this person is truly harrassing, that you contact your local authorities. It could turn out to just be a little punk causing them problems (In which case the police can teach the kid a lesson that harrassing is not to be done) and if it is some one more sinister the police can handle the situation. Getting an IP will not really do YOU, personally much good. The authorities have the ability to get the proper information and do it without the chance of breaking the law. (Just imagine if you could prosecute the person, but you went about getting the info in the wrong way?) Hope this helps.

MemberI know it’s just a kid in her school by what is being written, probably a girl.
I’d like to find out who it is and notify the school guidance counselor to take it from there. The IM’s are random, once a week or so, and from what my daughter says, that once she gets the IM, the person who sends it blocks her from replying back.
I have read that you can apply warnings on IM screennames… but I want this to stop.

MemberWhat about changing privacy settings so only people on her buddy list can IM her? Then change the settings back after a while. The person who is doing it probably has no life and will get bored very quickly and find someone else to harass once he/she can’t bother your daughter. School can’t do much when it comes to harrassing online since it is out of school.
Depending on the severity of the harassing the police could do something. But I think the best way is to just change the privacy stettings.

MemberYes, I was reading that last night about setting her privacy level to only accepting IM’s from those kids listed in her buddy list.
Thanks for your input. I think I’ll start there since I can’t see any other way to find out who it is.
Just wanting to protect my daughter.
