MemberIf you have a router that kicks you off AIM every 3-20 minutes and then signs you back on, this is for you =]
EDIT!!!! D-Link users (for most of you anyways) do not need to do this.. This is only for people who have the disconnecting issue. If u dont have to do this, then don’t.
For D-Link:
1.Go to http://192.168.0.1 in your web browser.
2. Type admin for the username and leave password spot blank.
3. Click the Advanced tab.
4. Click Applications on the left side.
5. Click the Enabled spot and name this entry “AIM”.
6. Trigger Port: 4099-4099
7. Trigger Type: TCP
8. Public Port: 5190
9. Public Type: TCP
10. Click Apply.Go to your AIM buddy list and at the top click My AIM > Edit Options > Edit Prefrences. Click the Sign On/Off tab on the left and click the Connection button at the bottom right. Make sure your connecting through:
Host: login.oscar.aol.com
Port: 5190For LinkSys:
1. Go to http://192.168.1.1 in your web browser. Leave username spot blank and put “admin” for the password.
2. Click on the Advanced section.
3. On the top bar click Forwarding.
4. Application: AIM
5. Start: 5190
6. End: 5190
7. Protocol: TCP
8. IP Address: your private IP address (i.e. 192.168.1.102) You can find your IP out by going Start>Run>cmd .. when the prompt comes up type “ipconfig” and your IP Address will show.
9. Click the Enable box.
10. Go to the bottom of the page and click Save Settings.Go to your AIM buddy list and at the top click My AIM > Edit Options > Edit Prefrences. Click the Sign On/Off tab on the left and click the Connection button at the bottom right. Make sure your connecting through:
Host: login.oscar.aol.com

No, as far as networking goes, this should not have nay effect on your AIM connection. I refuse to sticky this so more users can open their computers up to exploits.

MemberIt states on the D-Link and Linksys support websites that you need to open up 5190 in order for AIM to be connecting right. Otherwise it signs you on and off AIM all the time and most people find it very annoying. And it has everything to do with your AIM connection. I know this for a fact. http://support.dlink.com/supportfaq/DisplayTemplate.asp?contact=true&TemplateId=150504 <– The D-Link support to open 5190 for AIM.

ParticipantQuote:quote:Originally posted by sgebertThank you. If you don’t believe me about the connection problem with routers. Add XoChsCutieoX (do not IM her) wait for her to go on an away message and see how long u can stand it =]
The reason I don’t believe it is because I have AIM clients on my network behind Linksys and Netgear routers (Although both are behind my Linux gateway, they used to be directly exposed to the WAN). I’ve never ever had problems with disconnections. It would have to be something with the AOL-OSCAR protocol, or your ISPs routing. It doesn’t make any sense at all to have to open an external port to make an outbound connection

MemberSome of the routers (mostly Linksys) block the ports 1024-6000 when u buy the router.. Their already in the list of blocked ports. When I bought my D-Link it had 1024-6000 ports blocked in the Applications section. I don’t know why but I opened 5190 and it works perfectly. I opened 6346 for Limewire and 5000-5001 for Yahoo. Now I have everything working perfectly.
If anybody finds themselves run into another problem with AIM after these steps, please IM me (Rocaway711) or list it here and i’ll try and help with it =]

That is how NAT/IPMASQ works, of course it’ll block the ports, it has to know what IP you want any port forwarded to. And it also adds protection to your connection by not letting anything in.

MemberThere’s another thing you can do for the link sys router, but I’m not home right now to figure out what it is. Next time I’m at home, i’ll let you know what it is.

You are probably talking about DMZ (Demilitarized Zone – not a good idea).

Yes, I’m aware of that, that’s why I said it was a bad thing, I’m saying that it may be what badogg88 is talking about.
