Memberi tried the patch file posted above. I haven’t gotten any ad’s since, but we’ll see…
I’ll report back if i do get them again…
Anyone know how often the ad’s play? or is it just random?

MemberI edited my “hosts” file almost a month ago, and I have not received any more audio ads.
I think someone mentioned doing this above, but here goes again…
The hosts file is a hidden file located in the C:windowssystem32driversetc folder for those of you using WinXP.
Edit the file to include the following line:
127.0.0.1 ar.atwola.com
I’m using AIM 5.2.3292 and DeadAIM 4.0

It’s the same under Windows 2000, except that the ‘Windows’ folder will be most likely called ‘WinNT’. For Windows 98, the ‘HOSTS’ file can most likely be found as ‘C:WindowsHOSTS’.

MemberThanks for these answers. I thought my computer was possessed! I edited my HOSTS file and have downloaded the ad removal patch just in case. I’m also using AIM 5.2 and DeadAIM 4.

Participantjust thought i’d mention, i did the hosts file edit, and although i didnt hear the ads, i did get an error message every five minutes saying there was an invalid character… at first i thought it was one of my modifications that i screwed up, but once i removed that line from the hosts file everything has been fine. and i know i didnt mistype it or anything, i did a copy and paste straight from above.
so beware

MemberI don’t think that patch file worked.
I haven’t gotten any audio ad’s from my main sn, but when i cloned aim and signed on with my 2nd sn the aduio ad’s started again.

Participantcheck this out… its from the good folks over at WinMod forums, http://hack.modzine.net/viewtopic.php?t=726
basically its just deleting the “Aim_Ad” part of the buddy list dialog… i’ve done this mod, i’m gonna give it some time to see if it works

MemberWhere did you get the error message coming from TigerBlade? Was it an AIM error or a Windows error?
I’ve been using that hosts file modification for over a month, and have yet to hear an audio ad since I’ve made it.
Once again, I’m using AIM 5.2.3292, DeadAIM 4.0 and WindowsXP.

Participantit had to have been AIM, cause i never saw it until i fired up AIM, and if i had another window in focus, i’d hear the error beep sound, switch over through any other applications that were running to see what it was, and when i got to AIM, KABLAM there it was… error message. yeah i’m using all that except for DeadAIM 4.0… i’ve got the free version v3.2.8
but on a positive note, the ResHack alternative seems to have worked…. so it doesnt really matter for me anymore. no more ads, no more errors

MemberTigerblade,
I got rid of the debug error thing by in Internet Explorer, Tool -> Internet Options… -> Advanced Tab. Make sure “Disable Script Debugging” is checked, also make sure “Display a notification about every script error” is UNCHECKED. That should do it.
As for the sounds…I have modified c:windowssystem32driversetcHOSTS with the above site, I have applied the patch for AIM 5.2.3292, and I have deleted advert.ocm and copied Admin.ocm and renamed it to advert.ocm …. and I STILL get sounds (however, because of the patch, i no longer see the Ads, i only get sounds). I get at least 5 an hour and it’s driving me MAD! Please…any other suggestions…HELP!

Participantwell you can ResHack AIM, but unless you know what you’re doing… basically what you need to do is open your AimRes.dll file with ResHack. (make sure you’re exited completely out of AIM first) go to Dialog 323, find this line:
CONTROL “93142556”, 134, “_AimAd”, 0x50002680, 57, 15, 80, 37 , 0x00010000
delete the first string of numbers… i’m assuming its the same for everyone but who knows… so now it should look like this:
CONTROL “”, 134, “_AimAd”, 0x50002680, 57, 15, 80, 37 , 0x00010000
dont just delete the whole line, my AIM was rather messed up for a little while… i’m not entirely sure if this works or not, but seems to have worked thus far (a couple of days)if you really dont want to mess with it… i can email the patched file to you if absolutely necessary

The next ATE window (directly under this control) is the ad picture itself, this is what DeadAIM gets rid of i believe
