Squid
MemberIf you are suddently getting audio ads out of the blue.. its probably the new advertising “feature” with the new version of AIM.
to stop this, block these addresses in your firewall.
ads.aol.com
ar.atwola.com
VTOT.proxy.aol.com
ads.web.aol.comafter you do that, no more audio ads.

MemberEditing the line into the Hosts file has stopped all ads for me =) now if someone can just help me replace it rather than having a big white blank space.
I recommend the hosts fix for windows XP and AIM 5.2December 24, 2003 at 8:23 am #53805Gauth23
MemberAnyways, i was wondering does anyone else notice, or did you notice if you exit aim, or try and switch screen names while the audio is playing that you get a horrible blue screen of death … and i have xp , thats honestly the first blue screen of fatal proportions ive received since ive had on xp, all thanks to AOL trying to advertise.
i did mod my host file and no more ads so far. W0OT

MemberHey, I also started getting the audio file or little kids or something like that and the ad’s didnt bother me but then they did when they started ‘audio ads” so I changed a few things try this….
Where you Installed aim…search for the folder aim(also its probably this path…My Computer, C Drive or Local Disk Drive,Program Files, aim…Then inside that file should be 2 files one is called advert.ocm and the other admin.ocm, DELETE the advert.ocm file and recycle it, THEN RENAME the admin.ocm file to…..advert.ocm and if you are in aim exit and sign back in but if not then just sign back in and no more ads…FreeHelper

MemberI use DeadAIM and don’t have ads… does anyone here have it and does get ads? If you still do, try doing what Tigerblade said, it works.

KeymasterHi all,
Just a glitch.
Try fooling AIM that you have slower connection. In preferences, under sign on/off tab select ‘modem’ instead of ‘LAN’ as your internet connection. :D:D:D I think this may help lessen or stop the audio ads. I have not tried this because I don’t get much of them (just 2 or 3 a day at most).
If this works it may be a great solution for those who are not familiar with software stuff, don’t have time or are just lazy to do all tricks.
And PLEASE (especially to kids) don’t waste this much time after these kind of worthless things. I’d rather go to Lake Michigan on my skate board even if I knew (which I actually do) how to do all these tricks listed in this discussion.

MemberI’ve got Trillian with a SPAMChallenge plugin – so far as I remember, only works for AIM and ICQ spammers, but I’ve never had a problem with spam on yahoo or msn, so I personally don’t care. Haven’t had a problem with ads. Audio, live webcam, etc…

MemberAn update….
I have had to remove the hosts file update to block the ads, cos since doing this my system would stop loading any programs if it had been running for an extended period, this only started after this change. so if you get the same thing, I suggest removing the hosts edit.

KeymasterOk this is all weired. I don’t get your point. why do you want to stop ads? because it slows down your computer? If that is the reason then the solution of blocking those URLs in firewall is totally meaningless. Because firewall slows down a computer by a great extent. I don’t enable my XP firewall because I don’t have X-generation system. If you have that good system the those audio ads won’t affect performance at all. And those ads always have “pause” button on ’em.

Memberthe audio ads do have pause buttons but anytime I click those, it opens an IE window about the ad which is as bad as the audio itself. further on the host block causing me problems, it seems that it was making AIM crash somehow cos when I tried to shut it down when this happened it wouldnt close correctly and the icon stayed in the task bar.

Keymasterif you don’t mind if the ad stays in AIM and you just want to shut the audio up then try selecting ‘modem’ as your connection instead of ‘LAN’ in AIM preference as I said before. I cannot notice if this works because I hardly receive 1 or 2 audio ads in a day even if I am on all the time with ‘LAN’ as my connection type selected in AIM.

MemberI’ve had the audio ad problem for over a month now. I run Windows XP and have the newest versions of Deadaim and AIM. I would usually get 2 ads every time my computer started up, I even have had 2 playing at the same time. I decided to try to put the sites ads.aol.com, ads.web.aol.com, VTOT.proxy.aol.com and ar.atwola.com in the restricted sites section of Internet Explorer. If you don’t know, you can find this under tools, internet options and then security. I did this a few days ago and since then I have gotten no ads. I would recommend trying this… it may not work perfectly, only time will tell.
