MemberI have DeadAIM 3.2 and AIM 5.2 and I have only gotten maybe 2 or 3 audio ads. Of course now since I posted that, I will probably be getting them a lot. We can all pretty much tell that AOL is not concerned with their AIM users satisfaction. I’m guessing because AOL doesn’t get money from AIM users. It’s a bunch of BS if you ask me though.

Keymasterthe beta version deoesn’t have audio ads, i’m using it since 2 weeks.
chewy74 you can try resetting all defaults. and if it doesn’t work dl IE again. Though, it will take long on dialup.

MemberI tried Dling IE again, but it won’t even let me connect to the internet to DL the info.
meaning i dled the setup file, but when i try to execute the setup file and it connects to the internet to dl the needed IE files it won’t connect.
I’m on cable connection and know im connected cause mozilla still loads fine.what exactly does that prog do or did anyways?
I had to run a system restore from a comp image i has a few months ago. I had to look for/install a crap load of progs i dl’d from the internet too…
🙁

MemberI see the post that had the url to the pogram is now gone. I didn’t download it because it was an .exe file from a site that I wasn’t familiar with. Red flags immediately go up to potential viruses when I see stuff like this. Plus, I didn’t need it anyway, since after editing my hosts file, I haven’t gotten any audio ads.

MemberWell, since I wrote my first message I have had no audio ads whatsoever play from AIM. I didn’t install any programs to stop the ads or change anything with AIM. I also do not have a firewall running. All I did was what I mentioned above with the resticted sites option with IE. I do not get any errors with AIM, Windows, or anything else. Although this may not work well with everyone, I think I can safely say it has been a successful method for me.

The audio ads still work even if you have DeadAIM.

MemberI’ve read over this thread a million times, and the only thing that worked for me was blocking the addresses that Squid listed:
ads.aol.com
ar.atwola.com
VTOT.proxy.aol.com
ads.web.aol.comAs soon as I did that, BAM no more ads. It had nothing to do with deadAIM – that only took away the visual, leaving only the audio piece of the ads (which was twice as annoying).
I was getting annoyed because every time I would sign on AIM, it would play ads 2-3 times IN A ROW, then repeat every 30 minutes or so. That’s really annoying when you’re listening to winamp -_-

Memberhttp://s90686521.onlinehome.us/software/kill_audio_ads.exe . . . it does the hosts trick automatically, along with blocking many internet ad sites.

Memberim curious as to whether the viewpoint media player is what playing these ads. i cant see any other reason for why aim would install it. someone should try uninstalling that and see if you still get the audio ads.

Participantapparently i’m bumping a topic that’s been dead for about a month now, but I found a new way to do this if anyone is still getting these ads… (this is for 5.2.3292, but you can do a quick search for the same thing in other versions)
fire up reshacker, open the AimRes.dll file, and go to String Table 53, line 838. Change that URL (originally “http://www.newaol.com/aim/73594/adc.html”) to a URL of your choice, and no more ads. getting rid of that line means no more audio ads…
f0rbez – yeah I uninstalled that media player immediately after installing AIM, and I still got the ads
