MemberWhen I am logged on to AOL Instant Messanger, sometimes the application (IM) will automatically freeze. When I say “freeze” I mean I try to check a buddy’s profile, and it will say “please wait” and stay there for about 3 minutes. Another example of the problem is when I am talkin to buddy and I continue typing, while there is no response. I wonder why, and then they (my buddy) will say, “why do you keep logging in and off?” I tell them that I didn’t do anything, I was just waiting for their response. Somehow my AOL IM loses connection. If I sign on in the morning and leave for class and come back, sometimes it will say that I have only been signed on for about 5 minutes when my class was around 3 hours long. I have experienced it re-log on to IM while in the middle of a conversation and it is very frustrating. All I want it to do is stay connected no matter what so I can leave a buddy list up for hours or days and days.
NOW you may ask, how is your computer connected?” Well I do use wireless routing, but I have been on the phone with Linksys for hours and hours and they have guided me through the BEST POSSIBLE connection for my service. They opened ports, changed IP settings and EVERYTHING, so it is not really a router problem. They told me that this is not a common problem and there is something goin on with either the application or the computer. (I use Wireless B wireless router)
:mad:I have had this problem for about 6 months now, and I just been ignoring the problem, but now I KNOW that it is fixable, there is probably just a setting or two that needs to be adjusted. I dont know exactly what it is, but I am wondering if you guys can give me a hand because this is very important to me. This INstant Messanger is the only way I am able to communicate to certain people in my life who are important to me. PLEASE help me out. I have tried this before and gotton no response, so I humbly ask if you can help me fix this problem if you know what your talking about.
Also if there is a number or help line I can call, I would be more than willing to be on the phone for hours trying to fix this situation.November 17, 2004 at 6:30 pm #105087Sathallrin
MemberI first have to say, wow, I’m impressed, it is very rare someone will ask a question like this and give all the details and not simply say “help, I keep getting kicked off”. *applaudes*
This doesn’t sound like a simple setting thing, unless perhaps you have some kind of software firewall that is blocking it. I’m sure you have checked to make sure your wireless signal strength is at or near 100%, since having a bad connection there would cause this.
Besides that it sounds like it is caused by a faulty router or some other physical connection… but my best bet would be the router is bad. Anyone else here have another suggestion?

KeymasterTry this:
Open AIM, then Go to MyAIM > Edit Options > Edit Preferences, click Sign off/sign on on the left hand side, then on the right hand bottom corner click Connection… then click Auto Configure. You might have to repeat a few times, but theoretically AIM will detect the optimal settings for your configuration and resolve your dropped connections.
Of course, your mileage may vary.
One other excellent resource to check for user-to-user technical advice is Broadband Reports. They have special sections for most hardware manufacturers, Linksys included.

MemberLinksys told you that this is not a common problem? Lmao. I have 4 friends (in the same city and our city is small) that have Linksys routers that are fairly new and they do the same thing. Every 3-20 mins they’ll sign off. and about 5 mins later they’ll sign back on.. and this repeats and repeats. Do me a favor and IM me (gmillion20) and i’ll try and help you the best I can. I’m pretty good with routers. I seemed to help 3 out of my 4 friends fix it.

I’m telling you, it has nothing to do with the router. It’s your ISP. If you think it’s the router then explain why I ran just fine on THREE different routers? I’ve had WRT54G’s, BEFSR11’s and WRT11B’s – they all worked fine!

MemberIt is the router. Seriously, Why would I kid you? Everybody in my small city has BrightHouse Road Runner as their high speed provider. It’s the only provider we have here. 4 of my friends that have a Linksys router sign on and off all the time during conversations and when their away. It happens to NONE of my other friends. It’s the router. It might be a specific model of Linksys that does this.. I don’t know. but it IS the router.
