ParticipantEven though this was asked a while ago, I think it’s a great idea. I love Gaim despite it’s somewhat annoying quirks (like doesn’t remember window positions) and not as “pretty” as Trillian interface. It has darn close to all the features I want and it’s free and open source.

MemberI too like using Gaim when my usage is going to be sending text based messages or when am on my Linux box.
Perhaps could be a sub-forum under Alternative IM clients.

MemberPerhaps, instead we could add a whole nother forum for whatever category you would call messenegrs such as Trillian and Gaim (Possibly “Multi-Protocol Messengers”)? The Trillian forum isn’t exactly booming, and it would make sense to categorize it as a multi-protocol IM instead of it having its own forum.

KeymasterI always found this a bit weird. I thought it was weird to have a “Chat and IM Alternatives” forum, then a sub forum called Alternative Instant Messengers, then another sub forum called Google Talk, and another one with IRC, while still having a Trillian one, aren’t these all alternatives? I don’t know. I feel like this needs a bit of organization.

MemberI mostly agree with all the above comments.
While personally I despise ANY of these “multi” programs, I’ve tried most of them, and my feeling is that Gaim is perhaps as good as or better than Trillian these days.

MemberReading MiamiGuy’s and Easgle’s posts, I definately think we need to rethink and reorganize the Chat and IM Alternatives forums.

KeymasterWe can always change the organization of the forums. Trillian used to get a fair amount of activity, but has died down and should be considered for consolidation. Google Talk I think might yet warrant it’s own forum, but we’ll see.
Normally, I don’t create empty forums just to provide order. I divide forums when the consolidated forum becomes too congested to easily find what you’re looking for. In the case of Gaim, we don’t have enough traffic (yet) to warrant a subforum, in my opinion.
Now some people will ask, “so why did you create a Google Talk forum?” This was in anticipation of growth in Google Talk use, which I suspect already exceeds the Gaim user base (although it’s still way behind AIM, MSN, and Yahoo).
Suggestions?

MemberI think you’ve got it backwards, in my opinion. I think that people will come here expecting a Gaim forum, and when they don’t see one, assume it’s not supported here and go elsewhere, which is why we need to do a little reorganizing.
Perhaps something like this:
- Alternative Chat Protocols and Programs (may need to think of a better title)
- Trillian
- Trillian Discussion (optional)
- Trillian Support (optional)
- Gaim
- Gaim Discussion (optional)
- Gaim Support (optional)
- IRC
- Alternative Messengers and IM Protocols
- Google Talk
- Google Talk Discussion
- Google Talk Support
- Other Google Talk forums, possibly?

MemberYes – I vote for a Gaim forum – don’t care where it is! I’m new to Gaim, and, although I like it, I find that the “help” out there isn’t really helpful, when one does have a question. A forum here would do the trick!

ParticipantWell, the thing is we just don’t get many questions/concerns about GAIM. Which is why we have that other IM thing. For anything we don’t have. I mean, if people were having more problems, yeah we probably would have a GAIM fourm, but since it’s so darn good, there just aren’t as many problems with it. Actually, it’s more because they keep it simple that there aren’t as many problems as say with Trillian.

As Jeff implied above, we don’t have separate forums based on any sense of “best” IM programs, but simply those – good or bad – with the most interest, queries and discussion.
As far as Gaim goes, by all means post any questions or discussions under IM Miscellany (as I see you’ve done!). Eventually if/when this area has plenty of “Gaim” threads then obviously it would be considered for a separate section. - Alternative Chat Protocols and Programs (may need to think of a better title)
