ParticipantTo get on AIM at school/work place may be difficult due to all the filtering and security that is on the computers. At many schools, AIM express and downloading are blocked so students can’t get on AIM. To get on AIM at school/work place follow these instructions:
Download Terraim at http://www.terraim.com
Put it on a floppy disk, rename it to “calc”, this tricks the computers at school into thinking it is the calculator program that comes with windows so it can be opened.
Open the program on the school’s computer(Make sure it is named “calc”, and it should open up. No installation is needed.**This should work on most computers at school/workplace.**
Hope this helps students/workers who want to chat at school/work.

I’m definitly going to try this soon. Will it work using a USB flash drive instead of a floppy?

MemberHas anyone else tried this out yet? Did it work or not?

ParticipantMy friends tried it at their schools, and it worked.

ParticipantYou can usually skip on the “calc” renaming, btw. The reason TerraIM will run in school/library environments is that it doesn’t require an installation, which is what Windows usually locks users out of doing.
Also, TerraIM is currently in version 0.9 So if you find any bugs, make a post. Also, if anybody is interested in the latest beta version, let me know at matt@doorman.info and I’ll send you a link to it.

ParticipantAt my school, i have to change it to “calc” or it will not work.

ParticipantCrazy. I hadn’t heard of schools implementing any “whitelist only” security policies that tracked only by file name and not path, but I guess some do.

MemberGuys… an easier method would be just to use a foreign site. Most blockers don’t block foreign sites. The UK site for AIM Express is http://www.aol.co.uk/aim/aimexpress/

ParticipantI’d definitely go with TerraIM over any AIM Express. TerraIM is a full client meant for travel, so beyond the extra features like offline messaging (which is great when you’re on the go), it keeps all your settings like your profile on the disk. I guess if you don’t have a disk, you might try a foreign site, but hey, those small drives are pretty inexpensive now, so why not get yourself updated in tech.

MemberYeah this is true… but if you can get on the program and use it just by renaming it to calc is called a lame filter on your school’s behalf.
I thought of this idea a while ago without renaming the file and the program opened fine. Go to sign on, come to find out that the lame filter blocked port 5190 or whatever terraim uses to sign on…. which I assume is the default 5190…
I finally gave up… because my school’s filter system is lame. it blocks keywords in the title or content in the page. so if the page had “The aim of our company is to provide great service”, guess what… it’d get blocked because it has AIM in it.
I personally have talked with the developer of terraim (because I am in the process of helping him make some skins for the new release or whatever) and I will ask him about adding an option regarding changing the port used to sign on… but I have a feeling that my school will prob still block that too….
P.S. i’d so use terraim over aim express…. but that’s just my opinion 😉

Participanti must say your school is very strict and does a very good job at filtering.

ParticipantAlternate servers and ports has been suggested, hopefully to be implemented.
As for your filter, if its blocking ports, you’ll get around it. However, if they’re doing packet sniffing, there is no way around, though I’d be impressed if a school district were employing that.January 26, 2005 at 7:10 pm #112436ILikeCherryCoke

My school’s computers are amazing…. wow… anyway I thought i’d share that info with you
