ParticipantYou all may heard of Google Maps (maps.google.com) and you also may know that they recently bought the digital virtual map software company called Keyhole (Keyhole is used to make animated virtual maps that can show locations, like used on CNN when they show foriegn locations, it uses satellite imagery[sample videos below]. Hard to decribe check it out, http://www.keyhole.com), but what you may not know… is that they combined them to give you free satellite images on there Map service (you can change between map and satellite modes but clicking the button in the top right corner that corresponds) It pretty cool, its just like the Keyhole software, without animation, but yet free. It cool, check it out.
Here’s some videos of Keyhole in action:

KeymasterI read about the addition of satellite imagery yesterday. I’ve played around with Keyhole since about two years ago (long before they were acquired by Google). The technology is so cool.
What is really amazing about Google Maps is the realtime panning ability, and the load time for data. I haven’t clocked it, but it appears to be faster than any other map system I’ve used. And the street maps it generates are the best looking by far.
It’s unfortunate that the scope is limited to the United States and Canada.

ParticipantIt is nice, and ever since MapQuest sent our family on 60 miles of unneed road to get somewhere, I had to find a replacement.

ParticipantHmm, I guess I live in too new of an area. According to the maps I’m currently inhabiting a large baren field. ‘Tis quite cool otherwise though.

MemberIt’s cool, but what I dislike is it requires IE and ActiveX to work. If you’re a Netscape, Mozilla or Firefox user you’re SOL.

ParticipantI work at a gas station, so we have several people come in looking for directions with MapQuest’s work printed off. When they show me what MQ gave them, I have to laugh as some of the roads don’t even exsist.
The only thing I dislike, is that it is far from dial up friendly. *sigh* what is, now-a-days? :

Because if so, you are wrong. It doesn’t require IE OR ActiveX, and it supports Firefox, Mozilla, IE, Opera, Netscape and Safari. Check your facts.April 9, 2005 at 6:44 am #118516ys8er2323
MemberIts awsome, I can see my house so detailed that I can see which cars are in my driveway.

MemberI won’t be impressed until I can read the license plate on my dad’s car or see the treehouse in my backyard. It will be coming sooner or later, the government already has it.
I have to agree that Mapquest sucks, but I find google’s method of putting in address’s to be annoying.

KeymasterI think Google went with the concept that simpler is better. So you get a single field to enter an address. If you enter in just the zip code, that will work. If you enter in just the city and state, that will also work. If you also enter a street, that will work. If you also enter a street address, that will work, too. Basically, they give you the flexibility in one form to be as specific or vague as you want (or need) to be.
I agree that the form is a little disarming at first, but once you play with it a few times, the flexibility makes it much easier to use.

ParticipantThis is great. I like how you can drag the cursor to move around. And there’s only one search field; that is absolutely awesome. I can just type in “slc ut” and it shows me Salt Lake City, Utah. 🙂
