KeymasterWith the forthcoming announcement of Google Talk, I thought it would be interesting to see how many people here at BigBlueBall would consider switching to Google’s instant messenger.
I’m guessing that based on the success of everything else that Google touches, they’ll do o.k.
EDIT: Here is an early review with screenshots.

ParticipantGoogle; the sign of quality, If it’s Google I’ll switch moreover if it supports other IM clients that would also be a great addition to Google Talk.

MemberOf course it’s going to be good, it’s Google!
I will definately try it as soon as I can get my hands on it, I can’t wait. What will be even better is when someone develops the Google Talk Trillian Plugin. 😎

MemberI’ll sure be keen to give it a healthy workout, with an open mind.
Then I’ll return to YM, cos nothing could surpass that 😉

I completely agree and I don’t like I could live without aim. (Yes, I know it’s a pain in the rear at times)

ParticipantI would tend to be of the “If it’s Google, it’s gotta be good!” mindset, but the simple reality of IM networks is that if your friends aren’t on the network you are, then it doesnt particularly matter which one you *like*… as much as I dislike AIM, that’s what the majority of my friends use. and the other sad reality is that people dislike change, especially when its something they dont have any idea about. most people that aren’t particularly computer-savvy will be very reluctant to change over to a messenger, especially one that’s so new.
even though it’s google, and i have yet to be disappointed by google… it would have to have some degree of interoperability for me to switch from Trillian.

ParticipantI will probably like it, but it may get no use from me. At school AIM dominates the computer illterate people there, and Yahoo and MSN are just greek to them. So what comes into play is if it becomes popular, but really popular. Gmail is popular, yet anyone at my school except a few could care less of what Gmail is, or know about it. If no one that I talk to uses it, or even knows about it why would I have it sit in my taskbar taking space up? I hope Trillian releases a plugin for it, as TB said, it will take a lot to get me to switch from Trillian as well.

ParticipantHmm, tomorrow? That’s the first day of school (For me, at least).
I would definetely switch to Google Talk if I could easily get my friends to. But most of my friend’s barely know anything about google. I use Trillian, though the majority of them talk on MSN Messenger. They use this thing called “Hotmail”.
I am definetely going to check this out anyway.

Keymasteri don’t like/enjoy any chat service other than AOL Instant Messenger (even though i use a higly outdated AIM client) or Internet Relay Chat. the main thing i use AIM and IRC for is talking to people. i don’t care about buddy icons, smilies, and other crap. i only care about talking. most of my friends use AIM. if i ever want to contact them i know i can always type in their sn and they will recieve the IM. Google’s IM service is going to be great, but it would be pretty pointless to download another huge file that wastes space on my computer. the only other IM client i have installed is Gaim, so i can talk to people who use these “other” chat services. once the Google IM service comes out i’m sure all the other multi-protocol clients will support it. if they do, i guess i would use the Google IM service. if they don’t, don’t expect me to be using Google IM service any time soon.

MemberI wonder what sort of features will be in the Google client. Hopefully everyone with gmail will get an email about it, so I won’t have to explain it to all of my friends and convince them to use it. It would be even better if they’re already added to your contact list, and on top of that it would be great if you could email them regularly when they’re not online usign the client.

MemberHi! I’m new here, but just wanted to add in that you can use Trillian, GAIM, and a multitude of other Jabber supported clients. Ah the beauty of open source and open standards. 🙂 Just for the record, when you add a non-gmail contact, it’ll send that person a Gmail invite. Who knows, maybe you can sway your friends away from the defunct AIM they are using? hehehe….
For the record, I generally use Trillian Pro myself, but the Google Talk client is very clean. Also, the VoIP functionality will be moved to the SIP protocol, which is also an open standard. So basically, you’ll be able to use both your fave multi-protocol IM and a standard SIP client of your picking. Very cool I think.
