KeymasterThank you! It’s the official time of the year where I gain 10lbs from eating so much and not having to care. Woohoo! Of course then I have to end up running to lose it all, which one can do on “Black Friday” when everything goes on sale and everyone goes inside stores and run around in circles.

MemberHey, Thanksgiving isn’t for another two days!
All of my family is in Philly, and we aren’t going this year. It will just be me, mom, and dad on Turkey Day. And we are switching it up this year. We aren’t having a full turkey, rather just some turkey breast, along with some New York Strip Steak. And my mom is making this yummy dish that is hot apples and cranberries. I don’t know how she does it, but it’s really good.
I think my favorite part is AFTER Thanksgiving. Just picking at the turkey in the fridge is soooo good.
Eat, drink, and be merry!
PS: Sarah and Georgie, I’ll FedEx some turkey and stuffing over to you…oh and the apple/cranberry dish too if you wish.

OUt of cuisoity, what is Thanksgiving based on? I get the feeling it’s about inidians and the pilgrims but that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense?

MemberQwerty wrote:OUt of cuisoity, what is Thanksgiving based on? I get the feeling it’s about inidians and the pilgrims but that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense? In 1621, after a hard and devastating first year in the New World the Pilgrim’s fall harvest was very successful and plentiful. They found they had enough food to put away for the winter.
The Pilgrims had beaten the odds. They built homes in the wilderness, they raised enough crops to keep them alive during the long coming winter, and they were at peace with their Indian neighbours. Their Governor, William Bradford, proclaimed a day of thanksgiving that was to be shared by all the colonists and the neighbouring Native American Indians.
The custom of an annually celebrated thanksgiving, held after the harvest, continued through the years. During the American Revolution a day of national thanksgiving was suggested by the Continental Congress. In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln appointed a national day of thanksgiving. Since then each president has issued a Thanksgiving Day proclamation, usually designating the fourth Thursday of each November as the holiday.
I think this is about right Qwerty, but this is a Brit giving you an american history lesson, so I may have got some of it wrong. 😉

Yes, you did get it right. It was also more of a time to give thanks to the Native Americans for helping the Pilgrims through their first year (hense Thanksgiving)

MemberI’ll be going to my Grandma’s House for Thanksgiving. I’m looking forward to the stuffing, My absolute favorite Thanksgiving dish. Oh, and my mom and I are going to go to the mall on Black Friday the day after for some Christmas shopping. We don’t stay forever because of the hectic-ness. God only knows if we’ll get almost run over, and trampled like we did last year. Geez…

ParticipantJust be sure to remember, this is not “Turkey Day.” It is Thanksgiving. Too many people are forgetting what this holiday is supposed to be about, and turning it into no more than turkey and football.

MemberWell, Sarah…I have to say I am quite impressed…you certainly learned your history of the states…though now, the presidents have it easy…the fourth thursday of November is designated as Thanksgiving…the president does not have to declare it anymore. Actually, I was doing some research today on weddings and came across a newspaper article about two weddings…one the day before Thanksgiving and one on Thanksgiving…but that was back in 1882….whoo…there was some REALLY nice gifts people gave for weddings in those days. But the thread is about turkey and such…and I highly doubt any American football will be going on in our house…the only time the tv is on is when Sir Farve is playing…we don’t dig football around here…but we like Brett Farve…he’s just cool…even if he does play for a not so winning team this year. ANYWAY>>>>>>Happy Thanksgiving! Gobble Gobble! 🙂
