MemberWhy are Macs so high priced? Such as a 1Ghz E-mac with 128MB of SDRAM and a 40GB HD for 800$ when I could get a PC with a 2Ghz Processor, 512MB of Ram, and a 80GB HD for that much?
Does the MAC run faster regardless of the Hardware Specs? Is it the OS that makes it so expensive?

ParticipantThey do run faster compared to a PC. Plus, they work. Ive used macs for years, and have no problem paying higher prices for a dependable computer. I couldnt find a comparison for the G4 but here is one for the G5’s. http://www.apple.com/powermac/performance/

MemberYou can’t really compare the hardware specs between PCs and Macs simply by the numbers because they don’t necessarily measure on the same scales. Meaning a PC with 1Ghz processor is not equal to a Mac with a 1Ghz processor.
Macs are also more expensive because of they’re reputation in graphical rendering. Which is why the graphics design industry uses Macs as opposed to PCs.
Plus, Macs already look sexy when they come standard.;)

MemberI have an iMac G4. They are more expensive because Apple uses more expensive parts that last longer, thus giving Macs that invincible reputation. They also have a better OS, which is very nice in many regards. They also look really good. 😀

ParticipantWhy switch, and pay much more when you don’t really need to? I mean, your still in your teens right? Why not spend the money on a decent graphics card, a good copy of Photoshop, or PSP, and a good LCD? Unless your working for a huge company, in college learning graphics on Macs, or designing MAJOR kick ass sites, why waste all the money?
As for expensive parts; I believe their just expensive because Mr. Jobs was the first to create it, so anything smacked with an Apple sticker will be expensive.
But when we look into the G5…. I guess it’s worth the what.. $2500 bucks?

MemberThe right tool, for the right job. Macintosh for Productivity, Linux for Development, Palm for Mobility, and Windows for Solitaire.
I like quoting t-shirts. The Mac also is supposed to be awesome for Multimedia. For everday use though, PC seems to be the way to go.
From what I have heard, the Mac OS provides no user experience like Windows XP. My advice would be to go to a CompUSA and actually look at the OS and some of the programs that come along with it.

MemberWell its actually my dad. He is a photographer for a newspaper and does private video work for people. All of the powerful software he uses on HIS computer becomes very unstable because the Video stuff has to import and export digital video. With the images, photoshop elements is very unstable, and keeps crashing his comp.

ParticipantI work at a newspaper, and we use macs and adobe products for all of our photography and such. We use PC’s just for the simple task’s. Reports, email ect.
I have used both Macs, and PC’s. I actually put my 2.4Ghz P4 in the attic over my mac. I do everything on my mac. The same software is available for both. CompUSA, and online has the same games and in my opinion run better. My macs have rarely ever crashed. I use adobe products at home and never had them crash. In my opinion Macs are the way to go, even if they do cost a bit more, but you get more.

ParticipantYup, Macs are pricey little bastards. But they do deliver results. I used a Mac G3 for a few years at my previous job, and that thing never went down. I could send through 500MB+ print jobs without any problems. I think I only had it choke twice on some of the larger prints. I like the OS, its a nice change from Windows. Macs do have a few features that seem kinda stupid to the PC brainwashed user, but I’m sure the reverse applies just as well. If money were not a consideration, I would definately be a Mac user. But PC’s can do everything the Macs do, I’ve done video editing, photo editing and other design related jobs on both systems and as long as you’re using a decent PC, not those prebuilt POS, then there’s really no issues.

MemberAnd by the way, a 1 gHz G4 is about equivalent to a P4 2 gHz or more. And really, Macs use higher quality parts. And about the one button mouse, I have bought a *counts* 6 button mouse from Logitech. It works very well with my Mac. And yes, the Mac is very different from Windows, chiefly in that it doesn’t have a start menu or registry, and that menus such as File and Edit are at the top of the screen, and not attached to each window. Your preferences are stored in a Library folder for each user, and are easily accessible to the average user. The software is much easier to install and use, and you can get software that does most anything Windows software can, with the exceptions being in the games and *blushes* IM department. The IMs aren’t as spiffy as Windows ones, but they get the job done.
