ParticipantHow can I stop getting invaded by spammers in icq that keep bugging me to add them in their list and then see their website, or their webcam and stuff like that, everytime I log in theres a new invitation and of course I ignore them all but they keep coming back.

MemberWell, first, try not to go to their links. When you do that, they can get information and use it. It also helps, if you use an e-mail or something like that, to have one specifically for when you have to give your e-mail to sign up for something. Once you know you can trust a site NOT to spam you, you can always change the e-mail to which things are sent. But you are doing everything right, spammers spend their days and nights figuring out how to get to us…there’s no way we regular folk can combat it.

MemberThe ICQ spammers are requesting you to add them to your list because in the latest ICQ clients there is an anti-spam filter that rejects messages containing URLs from users off your contact list. So spammers ask you to add them, then they send the URL.
Now, you may have noticed that you only get these requests when you are online for a while. Spammers don’t send these requests to users who are offline, because they want immediate attention from online users who can follow their links.
Now, the way that spammers determine who is online and who is offline is by the Web Aware feature. This feature can be used to show people on Web sites your ICQ status. It’s that little green or red flower you may have seen on Web sites. It’s also used when you search for someone in the ICQ client. If they have their Web Aware setting on, you will see a green flower for online, and red for offline. If they have their Web Aware disabled, you will see a purple or grey flower.
If you disable your Web Aware setting in ICQ, the spammers won’t bother sending you an authorization request because they don’t know that you’re online for sure.
The Web Aware setting can be found in Main > Preferences & Security > General: “Allow others to view my Online/Offline status from the Web” in ICQ 4.
