MemberMy grandparents want me to send them a bunch of files that are too big for Y! Messenger or my email provider. So I have decided to use TelNet. The only problem is I have no clue how to get their IP address or host name or whatever it is that you have to do. In other words I need to know how to connect to their computer and all that stuff. They have absolutly no computer skills, but they do have a shotcut to TelNet on their desktop.. Please help me out on finding the right information to connect to their computer.. Any info will be appriciated. Thank you.

MemberYou will be better using a dedicated file share program. Search for some on google. There are many free ones.

MemberThis I would do but… I want to learn TelNet, I’m interested in this kinda stuff and I would like to find out their IP address through Yahoo and just use TelNet to get a direct connection to their computer so I don’t have to download anymore programs. My hard disk space is very limited and I don’t have much room for anymore files.

MemberYou can’t simply just send files over telnet. There must be servers set up to take files etc…
But please, use http://www.google.com to search on how to do it your way.

You don’t have room for a little program, but you have room to download files that are too big for Yahoo? Hmmmmmm. 🙂
For a simple solution, you might check out ICQ Lite. I know people who use that primarily because it lets them send very large files… even over 60 MB!

MemberAs I said in my first posted message, it is not me who is downloading the files, it is my grandparents. I am the sender, they are the reciever. As I also put in a previous message, I would like to learn how to use TelNet, and I already know about the whole thing with servers being set up to recieve the files, I have that all worked out. I would appreciate it if smart ass replys be with-held from my topic. I strictly want to know how to do this through TelNet, no other file transfer programs intrest me.

KeymasterIt’s not likely that they have Telnet setup on their computers. Most Windows computers do NOT have it running by default. But if you’re insistent on doing things the hard way, go to http://www.telnet.org for information on what Telnet is, how to use it, Telnet applications, etc.
My understanding of Telnet is that it simply allows you to execute programs on a remote computer. If you’re grandparents allow this, they are putting their computer at risk. I don’t know for certain, but I don’t think it lets you transfer files. For that you’d want to use FTP.
As for their IP address, I’d simply ask them! If they’re running windows, they can open a command window and run ipconfig to determine their current IP address.
Good luck.

MemberLast time I was visiting their house, I set everything up on their computer and showed them where the shortcut was, this is the only reason that they even know how to get to this program, the only thing left to do is get their IP address and then it’s all good, they aren’t very good and computers but I showed them how to use TelNet, they do not have a clue whatsoever on how to get to “WINIPCFG” we already tried that multiple times and failed. I need a program or something to get there IP while running Messenger. I know I’m making it complicated but it’s kinda my only choice…

MemberThis sounds very suspicious to me.
You know how to use a telnet client to transfer files (not even possible), yet you can’t get an IP from a computer (possible).
You can’t share files over telnet. Telnet on windows is just a client, and not a server. Telnet was used in the past for various different applications, and is still uses for people to log into remote computers, for example I log into my webspace through telnet to perform maintenance, backup files, and set up permissions and write and execute scripts.
You should take the advice and get yourself a file sharing program. then ALL you have to do is send them a link, with YOUR ip address.

ParticipantHow To Get Your IP With WINIPCFG
On Windows 98, or ME
Go Start > Run…[/b] > Type winipcfg > [ENTER]
Make sure your Ethernet Card is selected and your IP address is displayed below. On Windows XP
Go Start > Run…[/b] > Type command > [ENTER] > Type winipcfg > [ENTER]
Your IP should be displayed. You can also discover their IP address by making a direct connection with them through a File Transfer and run Netstat in the MSDOS Command Window to view connections.
Go Start > Run…[/b] > Type command > [ENTER] >Type netstat > [ENTER]June 13, 2003 at 8:13 pm #95016macroheadwithamicrobrain

And what Messenger has something to do with it?
I agree with Freddy. This is very suspicious.June 13, 2003 at 8:17 pm #95024Johnson
MemberThis sounds very suspicious, I have known a lot of people in yahoo that have used telnet to enter peoples pcs via trojans. I’m not sure what other uses it has, but I have heard of it used for net meetings, I have done a net meeting on msn, but for sending large files doesn’t sound practical. I have never sent anything via email that was too large, didn’t know there was any limits on how big of a file you could send someone. If you enter someones pc via trojans and they live in a different state then you, it’s a federal offense, not really worth it. Sounds really fishy to me.

Tell them to visit this site and to paste the results on there to you. You’ll have their IP address and their hostname then.
I don’t find it suspicious at all by the way. Maybe when someone brings up the word ‘IP’ you get suspicious, because it’s what ‘hackers’ always want… but trust me. EVERYTHING you do on the internet requires your IP. So EVERYONE on the internet has an IP. And EVERY machine on the internet you communicate with knows your IP. There is NO way to hide it. You can only secure it. Install a decent firewall and you’re fine.
