MemberHow do I keep AIM from putting an away message up when switching users in XP? When I switch users, without logging off, AIM automatically puts up the default away message. I don’t want that, if I want an away message, I’ll put it up! Thanks for you help!

KeymasterGo to My AIM > Edit Options > Edit Preferences > Away Message and set it to “Insert in personal profile only.” This way, the only way they’ll see your away message is if they check your profile. You can take this a step further by editing the default away messages to “blank” messages.
Also, make sure your Idle Message setting is unchecked, and under Privacy, uncheck “Allow users to see how long I’ve been idle.” That should pretty much do it.

MemberThanks for the reply. I do want users to be able to see when I have away messages and am idle, I use away messages all the time! I just don’t want AIM to automatically put the default one up when I switch users, I don’t want any other changes. Is this possible?

MemberI have XP as well and I don’t think there is a way to get around it, its written into the Windows XP programming.

MemberOK, well I just found out that it at least doesn’t replace an away message you already have up with the default one, so i’ll just put my own up before i switch users. I’ll also find the registry hack or whatever to change the default message.

Memberyou dont need to hack into anything to change your default away message, you can change it by editing it in preferences 😀

MemberOK guys I figured it out… Go into regedit (start > run, type in “regedit”), then go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Softwhere > America Online > AOL Instant Messenger (TM) > Users > [your screen name] > IAmGoneSpecialCases, and then rename or delete the value, “OsLO.” And there you have it! No more automatic away messages at least for that screen name on that windows username. Hope this helps someone!
