What kind of IM is he using?? If it is Yahoo! then you just open your messenger, click on the messenger tab at the top, go to change status, and change it. You can even create your own automated message. email me if you have anymore questions.
It sounds like you are talking about “away messages” LLxerxes. An away message can be an automated reply when you are away from the computer. Some IM clients, like Trillian or Aimutation, will allow you to be “away” and have your message come up, but you can still talk to your buddies. Try going to My Aim>>Away Message>>New Message
Then create your new message and you are done 🙂
