At Lotusphere this week, IBM announced a midyear upgrade to their Lotus Sametime instant messenger that will provide interoperability with AIM, Yahoo! Messenger and Google Talk. Lotus Sametime 7.5 will also include a mainstay of the consumer instant messaging market: emoticons or “smileys.”
IBM is also planning to incorporate “click-to-call” web-based voice calls through deals with Avaya, Nortel, Polycom, Premiere Global Services, Siemens AG and Tandberg ASA.
Conspicuously absent from this list was Microsoft, who markets a competing enterprise product. Unlike Microsoft, whose Live Communications Server offers connectivity to Yahoo! and AIM for a price, Lotus Sametime connectivity will be included at no additional cost.
The walls keep crumbling…
Soon all will be able to talk, we will not be held by boundries of what everyone else uses…I can’t wait.
