MemberI am new to this forum and to IM, so please bear with me. My PC is connected to DSL and I leave it on all the time. Friends contact me and ask what I was doing on line at 3 in the morning because when they look at my status at 8 in the morning, it may show me as having been idle for 5 hours. That is just an example of the time. My question is, what can be causing my machine to come out of idle status when no one is using it?

MemberThat could be due to a number of things. It could be a booter, your firewall(provided you have a firewall turned on),it could also be your ISP refreshing your IP(provided you have a dynamic IP(an ip that changes everyday)-once the IP changes it would force a d/c from the yahoo server. If you have auto-login set on yahoo it would automatically log back in and you wouldnt even notice.
Or and probably unlikely yahoo are disconnecting you because you are Idle for long periods.

MemberMy machine looks the same in the morning as it did the previous night. Any suggestions as to how I go about tracking down the cause?

ParticipantGo to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer and see what is recorded about the time you think the idle counter is restarted.

ParticipantMenu Messenger, Sign Out, uncheck the option and sign back in, the change is stored in windows registry.

MemberGot it – thanks! You folks are really adding to my scant PC knowledge and I really appreciate it. Naturally, I have more questions.
If my ISP changes my IP address, what kind of event will that generate in the Administrators Log?

ParticipantIf your computer’s network interface got its IP changed you see “TCPIP” under Source column in Event Viewer, System. Right click the line, select properties for more details. But with DSL, you’re behind a router and your computer doesn’t see the change on the WAN side, you may find a log in the router.
If you want to have a log for processes, go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Local Security Policy, Security Settings, Local Policies, Audit Policy and turn on the Audit Process Tracking. The log of every process start is in Event Viewer, Security.
To see in detail what happened between Y!m and some Yahoo servers you can install a packet sniffer (“Packetyzer” per example) and record data packets exchanged between your computer and Yahoo servers.

MemberSo, since I am on DSL, a change in IP address by my ISP shouldn’t cause my PC to go out of idle? I didn’t realize that my DSL modem functioned also, as a router. Thanks for the other input on logging.

ParticipantTo change the DSL IP, there should be a short disconnection, Y!m goes offline and online. Uncheck the “Automatically sign in”, Y!m will stay offline until you click “Sign in” and by this way you can see if Y!m goes offline during the night.
