Imagine a stuffed toy Daffy Duck that “talks” to you, reading instant messages you receive via AOL Instant Messenger. Sound creepy? This is the vision behind LA-based United Internet Technologies recently announced line of IM-capable toys.
Aimed at preteens, the animals will use voice synthesis to read the instant messages you receive, turning your messaging session into a more personal experience. Reminds me of the animatronic Abe Lincoln at Disneyland. The toys will contain filters that will attempt to block inappropriate material, but there is obviously a big risk.
On the flip-side, just imagine what this technology might do if repurposed for a more mature audience.
