MemberI popped into a chat room today and at the heading of the room it said… “You are in “Connecticut:3” ( (Notification: Your IP address is currently being recorded.) ) I then tried going from room to room and it says it in every room. Weird.
What the heck does that mean?

MemberIt happened to me too. But I noticed that only when I followed someone.

MemberHi guys,
I never use the chat rooms, but I just popped into one and found the same thing.BUT…. gosh, I wouldn’t worry about it. It sure aint any hacker or baddie, it’s obviously a new security step installed by Yahoo itself, for our PROTECTION. 🙂
Any program like YM that you connect to MUST have access to your IP#, otherwise you couldn’t connect. This is just Yahoo’s way of saying it now keeps a log of these, so IF you misbehave etc then you can be traced.
So it’s just like more police on the streets – if you’re an evildoer you should be scared – otherwise you should be very PLEASED to see such a message. 🙂

MemberHi Kiwi,
I figured that it had something to do with “be afraid, be very afraid you baddies!” Just wasnt sure if it was just me or everyone! Im certainly no baddie!;)

MemberWell, I suppose that could be debatable. 😉 ha! just kidding.

MemberOkay, now I get that message everytime I go into a room. Probably something to do with Yahoo! turning into a “adult only” entertainment, I guess.

Member“Adult Only” !??? More the opposite, I’d have thought.
YM Chat Rooms have a reputation for being unruly, obnoxious, and uncontrolled – this seems a way to tidy them up a bit surely – and REMOVE people who behave inappropriately.

MemberPerhaps, I just read some news about making Yahoo chat rooms minor free. Although I’m not quite sure how that will be accomplished.

MemberYahoo has been recording the IP address of it’s users for a very long time. In fact, probably when they started the service. They have just recently started telling people that they are doing it. This is most likely to avoid any kind of possible lawsuite that could be brought about due to some stupid idiots thinking that their privacy is being invaded. Nothing has changed other than the fact that they are telling you that they are doing it.

MemberZhugeliang, is right. Yahoo has always recorded your IP address or the IP address of your proxy server. That is just how things are done on the net. You always leave a trace of where you have been. Even visiting this website, your IP address is logged. They have this warning up on chat rooms that do not have a description next to the name. If you do something that warrants, a court subpoena may be obtained and Yahoo will have to turn over the logged IP address. Which will show who your ISP is, and when they are served the subpoena they will have to provide your identity. Your IP address is recorded when you send emails, do file sharing, visit websites, and chat. You shouldn’t worry about your IP address being recorded by Yahoo if you are just chatting.

MemberThanks, people 🙂
I’ve been plagued by the notice today and was searching the net for additional info and landed here… although it’s funny how Yahoo! suddenly decides to go ‘public’ with this; everybody knows that IP addies are tracked… I was concerned that there was more to it than that… anyhow, enjoy the chat rooms, people… I certainly do!

MemberYou would actually be suprised by the amount of people that actually dont’ know that IP addresses are tracked and recorded by the sites/services you visit/use. I’ve seen many people freak out about Yahoo posting that they are recording their IP.
