MemberIf I am in a yahoo chat room, can the people in that room see my IP address if I am just sitting in the room?
The reason I ask, is that I am being stalked. I just like to go into the music rooms and listen to music. I don’t ever talk to anyone (anymore anyways). I’ve changed my chat name, but have no way of changing my ip address. I just want to make sure if I’m in a room and this person happens to enter the room they can’t tell it’s me under another name.

MemberNo, no one can see you IP address. Remember Yahoo acts as a middle man, for example, when you send an PM it goes to the Yahoo Server, then the Yahoo Server sends it to the person you are sending the message to.
More or less if someone did try to look for IP’s in a chat room or whatever
all the would get is the IP of the Yahoo Server. The only way someone can get your IP is if you have a direct connection
with them. aka Webcam, File Transfer, using the Call feature, ect.August 27, 2006 at 1:39 pm #151238cj1238942
MemberThank you for your reply. I am new to this computer world and learning some things the hard way.
I was in a room and there was a guy causing trouble, so someone said I’ll do a IP scan and then published some IP numbers in the room and said those are his numbers. I got a little nervous and thought how did he do that?
So he must of did some sort of a scan and got the Yahoo server numbers???
I’m so glad I have found this site. I am a computer learner in progress. And I always have questions LOL….

ParticipantRemember if you add someone to your Buddylist it can be possibe for that person you added to get your IP address, same with Some other options in Yahoo! like Supercam and Big File transfers.
However just sitting in chat listening will Not give them your IP address.
People who start about ip’s in chat are just trying to be cool and scare new chatters, pay absolutely no heed to them or ignore them.
🙂

ParticipantHi, I am a frequent reader of these forums but I’ve never posted before until now since I’d like to add my two cents to this subject.
An IP address is by no means a holy grail to anything. An IP address is more or less a street address on the internet. You can know where someone’s house is located, but that’s not even half the battle if you want to get inside of it. The most personal information someone can get from your IP address is just some information about your internet service provider which you can read freely on the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN). Since I cannot figure out how to insert HTML code on this forum, the link is http://www.arin.net — you can run a WHOIS query from there.
Booters are not hackers; mic lockers are not hackers; voice laggers are not hacker and the same goes for their entire entourage – they are merely script kiddies that download programs off the internet. I wouldn’t worry about your little run in as it happens with me all the time. Don’t go running your mouth on them – just hit the ignore button.

MemberIf Yahoo is monitoring IP addresses, then how can so many bots get into chat rooms? A room has a max of 50 visitors and I find 45-49 of the names in the list are bots. It’s getting much worse and I can see why real people don’t go into chat much any more.
