Memberyahoo failure, msn failure… remember aim failures back a while? it’s one thing to be a freeware/opensource developer, but I’m sure companies who fund the various IM infrastructures (yahoo, msn, aol) aren’t too pleased with a company ** profiting ** from them, by reverse engineering their protocols, (trillian) without some kind of compensation — given that trillian circumvents their respective ads
let it be known that I’m no longer a fan of trillian having wasted time and money on trillian “pro” 2, but that in no way detracts from the facts. I hate all variations of politically “correct” and was beyond vexed by the extremism present in the trillian “support” community. So keep your character assassination attempts to yourself 😉
It’s http://miranda-im.org for me for the forseeable future!

ParticipantActually what you are paying for are the xtra features that come with Trillian Pro, not the IM functionality.

MemberRight you are, Alex…
The developers of Trillian have no control over the funtionality or connectivity of their product and therefore can not guaruntee any. This is a given… But what good are the extra features that you pay for if the products main function, to connect to multiple clients at once, doesn’t work?Whatever: Yes, there are some very extreme people over there… but it’s like anything else in life… You have to take the bad with the good… It’s just harder to ignore when “the bad” has a loud backup band, lol. Rest assured “the good” is there, as it is everywhere… It’s often found behind the noise of “the bad” whose function is often to drown out the voice of reason if it goes against what “they” think is “the way”. Then there are those that see the problem but who don’t think they have the strength to speak up over the volume of the “backup band”… 🙂

MemberIMO…I think the IM companies (AIM, MSN, YIM…) would like to put an end to Trillian and Miranda like messengers. Again, IMO.

I don’t think that they want to put an end to Trillian and like third party clients but they are no longer willing to give a free ride… What amazes me is the “stick your head in the sand” attitude that prevails. Consider the latest statement made by a mod over on the Trillian forum regarding the looming Oct 15th deadline set by MSN:
“This issue has already been discussed at length.http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/foru…&threadid=42884
Cerulean Studios has updated its clients to the new MSN protocol, so there should be no problem.
Denny D. Daugherty”He linked to a locked thread so no discussion is permitted there and new threads are locked…
What he failed to mention was that Yahoo also gave a deadline, September 24th… CS’s official statement was, Cerulean Studios has updated its clients to the new Yahoo protocol, so there should be no problem.
And we all know how that went… Furthermore, Yahoo isn’t requiring third party licences, MSN is… Now I don’t personally know if there will be a problem with MSN connections after Oct 15th, 2003 but I would be very surprised if there are none. At least my eyes are open… Hopefully CS has signed a deal with MSN and there won’t be a repeat of the Yahoo issue… Course there’s nothing stopping Yahoo from twisting again either so who knows…
By not allowing discussion of the issue it’s like the mod is saying just ignore it, it’ll go away… Hopefully that will not be the fate of the software as a result… There are lots of people willing to stand behind Trillian but those who would do so with open eyes are not willing to stick their heads in the sand…

Are they giving refunds if MSN shuts them out…doubt it. I agree with your post.

MemberI personally The developers use aol’s bandwith free of charge and dont have permission or limitations. I highly doubt instant messaging companies like that. I also doubt that yahoo will be successful if it tries to make a program that uses all of the other messengers. Other companies aren’t going to want to give competors access to their software and servers unless they are payed a large some. But the news talks about yahoo continuing to gain more money so maybe they can pull it off.

MemberStuff like this happens. Trills working fine for me now. You’ve got to be patient with it young grasshoppers. 🙂

MemberI can’t see what all the fuss is about. People seem to be complaining that Trillian’s connection to the big media isn’t guaranteed. This seems totally bizarre to me… it never has been guaranteed!
I don’t use Trillian because I think that the makers had contracts with the big companies and my connection will never go down… I use it because I know when it does go down the makers will have a patch out to fix in no time at all (going by past experience).

Memberquietbritishjim is quite correct. I don’t ever remember the creators of Trillian promising that connection will always be available. I use Trillian the same reason he does and because it allowes me to connect to 6 clients using one program. Trillian has to be one of the best programs I have seen, clean, tidy, and packed with features.

MemberAmen. Trill’s one of the greatest programs I have on my HD and people start whining and complaining because it doesn’t always work perfect.
Hey, neither does Windows and we paid for that.

MemberPreach on brothas! 😀
I’ve been a happy Trillain user for several years now. Recently moved to Pro and still like it very much. Lots of features, lots of control. A few bugs…but as Wolfrider said, it’s not perfect. Guess what?! No software ever is!
So what if Yahoo goes down? To be honest, it didn’t faze me one bit since I rarely use Yahoo anyway. 😎 It would be irritating if ICQ went down, but that’s the way things are with that big thing we call The Internet.

MemberEverytime an IM provider changes, Trillian adapts. I guess it started with AIM. I do not use that so do not know how long it took for Trillian to release a patch. The latest was Yahoo. The patch took about 2 weeks. That seems long, but if you really needed to talk to someone on Yahoo, you could simply launch Yahoo. I stand by Trillian. It is a great program. Why have 3 or 4 messengers running when you can have 1 program running? The only beef I have (and have not tested this out with 2.0 yet) is that Yahoo video has some major glitches. When I tried it I was either using .74 or 1.0.

Works great in 2.0 🙂 Although it is a shambles that it took them a full year to fix it. They said that it would have taken longer to release 2.0 if they’d patched it in place in 1.0, but I don’t think this is really a good excuse.
October 17, 2003 at 2:16 am #89465Wolfrider
MemberI want 2.0 so bad, although I’ve got so many IMs it seems like a waste of money.
