Hello,
First, I’m relatively new to the IM world. You guys have a nice site here.
I would like to know if there is a way I can chat using Gtalk to a friend who has a .Mac account using iChat?
Does one of us have to get an account with some other IM provider?

As long as iChat can support the Jabber protocol, then you can use Windows with Google Talk and he can use Mac with iChat.
Search Google Talk help for ways to have iChat connect to the Google Talk server.
Maybe your friend should use Gizmo project. Taken from http://www.google.com/talk/developer.html :
