MemberIn the last week, I installed a new hard drive, clean instal of Windows XP Home edition, and the current version of Yahoo messenger. Within the first day of installing messenger, it began crashing when my wife tried to log into her accoung. Crash occured within 5 secondes of logging in. I was able to log in with out crashing. Tonight, I uninstalled messenger, ran a full system cleanup and reinstalled it. Now it crashes within 5 seconds of my logging in. I tried to log onto yahoo with trillian with the same result…within 5 seconds of yahoo connection on trillian…it crashed just as Yahoo messenger has been doing. I can run trillian with AOL, MSN and ICQ just fine. I am stumped…Any suggestions?

MemberI have not installed XP SP-1 as the first time I did, it corrupted my windows install, and I had to start over from scratch. I have done the other updates however. Was there a particular update you were thing of that may be causing the problem? I have been using yahoo messenger for 7+ years and have never seen this problem.

MemberThere could be a corrupted file in the version of yahoo messenger you are using. What version is it and maybe you could try an older version if you are having problems with this one, have you checked your settings? Are you behind a firewall? That could be the problem also.

MemberThe problem has finally been solved. There was a conflict with Messenger and Macromedia’s Flash Player. I had Flash Player 6 loaded on my system. A simple uninstall of player and messenger works just fine. I reloaded Flash player 7 and there is still not a problem

MemberHello! I had the same problem with Y! Messenger. Yes, FlashPlayer is the culprit, but here’s why:
The Yahoo! Insider pop-up box that appears after a fresh install generally has ads on it that were coded in Macromedia Flash. A box will appear that asks if you would like to trust content from Macromedia. This interaction causes the problem with Messenger. Very weird, but I hope that more people see these posts because otherwise, you’d pull your hair out trying to solve this problem!

MemberTo follow up as to why you could not connect via Trillian:
Yahoo! Messenger recently implemented a protocol to block 3rd party messenger programs. So, software like Trillian and gAIM will not connect to Y! IM.
