MemberHello… I am new to this site, so please bear with me. I have dl’ed 5.5 & had version 1254. After that my preset sounds for when a Friend Logged on stopped working & the “BUZZ” option quit working as well. All other sounds work just fine (i.e. YahoMail, Friends Leaving, etc.). It is only those 2 that I have problems with. I have completely removed 1254 & am now running on 1244 & having the same issues. It’s like something was re-set on my PC & I am not sure what. All other programs are just peachy!! I am using Windows 98 & do have Black Ice Defender on my PC, but none of my settings on either have changed. Please help!!!

MemberCheck the folder c:program filesyahoo!messengermedia
Open that folder in explorer/my computer whateverCheck that the files knock.wav and doorbell.wav are there. These are the ones you have having problems with.
If not, you can get a archive of all the yahoo! wav files here http://www.freddys-utilities.co.uk/owavs.zip

Memberladybug you can also easliy set the sounds alerts in messenger by clicking on login/preferences. Select alerts & sounds. Select “A friend buzzes me’ from that list, then below notice that ‘ear’ icon & the path to a sound beside it, click the browse button there. You can select any .wav file in Yahoo’s Media folder, or also any other .wav file found on your computer. Once you choose a sound click on apply & then just click on that ‘ear’ icon to test/hear the sound chosen.

MemberAll my sounds are listed in the Yahoo Media folder. I use the “Yahoo” sound when someone logs in & the “Doorbell” when I get buzzed. Both are set in my sound preferences & both work when I test them using the ear icon. In fact it does not matter what sound I use… it is those 2 options that are not working!!
Please help me!!! 😀

MemberI would look at this as being a good thing, i have all of my yahoo sounds disabled, they are all so ANNOYING! When i talk to people on voice and hear them getting messaged it drives me nuts, yahoo! really really needs to change their sounds, something a lot more soothing like aim has or msn even. But if you are wanting to hear them, maybe your sound isn’t working at all? Can you hear anything else?

MemberAll my sounds work on my system… games, other programs, media players, etc. The problem is on the 2 sound options I mentioned. Any .wav file works when it is tested, but the minute they are applied & OK’ed they don’t.
Help please!!

Memberladybug I am also running 5.5 1254 (on win 2000, Norton Firewall) and decided to check on whether my sound alerts are working correctly. I have knock.wav selected for ‘A Friend Buzzes Me’. I IM’d myself from another account and heard nothing the 1st time. 2nd time I heard a ding (this is NOT a sound within the media folder). 3rd time I heard the ding again, & 4th time nothing again. Tried to fix it by selecting another .wav from the media folder, then yet another. Tried 4 there altogether. I got the same result, sometimes a ding & other times I heard nothing at all. I right clicked the Yahoo icon in taskbar, selected ‘sign out & exit’, then restarted my pc. I tried the exact steps again. This time I even tried selecting .wav files on my pc NOT within the media folder. It still would not play the selected .wav when my ID was Buzzed. I went to the extent of having Nhyrvana buzz me from her messenger, I heard a ding.wav the 1st time then each time she buzzed after the 1st I heard nothing. The times I buzzed Nhyrvana she heard a doorbell, then nothing, then chimes etc(Same problem seems to exist with her 5.5 1254 on Win Me). I had another friend on messenger try as well. We also got the same results.
I checked ‘sounds & media’ in the control panel, clicked on the sounds tag there & determined that the ding.wav I have been hearing is set as the windows default beep .wav. Not sure why it plays that file when someone buzzes me, or why it is playing random .wav files WHEN they play at all. But I can say my alerts sounds are really screwed up, and play the wrong sounds, if they play ANYTHING at all. Just wanted to let you know you are not alone on this one ladybug lol. Yahoo glitch would be my guess.

MemberIf a program tries to play a sound, and for any reason at all it cannot, then it plays the default system sound, which is the annoying ding, or if that fails, it uses the even worse system speaker, the dull buzzing sound that comes from your pc tower.
The BUZZ!! sound is the doorbell, but you can only buzz a certain amount of times, i.e. you can BUZZ!! me now, but you have to wait about 2 minutes before you can BUZZ!! me again.

Clarifies: Yes, I know the ding.wav occurs because the program can not play the sound. In saying I do not know WHY it occurs, I mean it should not be happening at all as the doorbell.wav as well as knock.wav has been tested as well as every other .wav in the media folder as the alert they all play fine in the test within preferences and still they do not work as they should when I am buzzed by a friend. This is not occuring due to the set limit to how often one may buzz! as I tested it a number of ways and found it’s behavior to be unpredictable & unreliable. As I said it did not even work the 1st time ( I saw the BUZZ! on screen but heard NO sound at all…) Yahoo glitch.

MemberI was not answering you.
I was answering the original poster, and adding comment to a discussion, it was not clear in the thread why ding.wav plays when a sound doesn’t exist, I was making this fact known, to avoid any confusion.I would say that there is an error with Yahoo! Messenger causing the sounds to play wrong. Just another to add to the list.

MemberAre you referring to me freddy? If so please realize I was not answering you either. If I were answering you I would have directed the post at you by including your ID in the post. As you can see by my actions in selecting the quote of my last post I was answering my own post in an attempt to clarify a few things. 🙂

MemberYep, I was referring to you;)
Sorry to confuse you.
I was not trying to say you was wrong, or put you right, I just felt it was appropriate to mention why ding.wav gets played, for the benefit of those reading the thread. You knew that, but not everyone does.
I felt by you “Clarifying” you know why it was played, when I was the only one who had stated this, that you was refering to me, and I did not want you to think I was trying to correct you.:)

MemberCan we get back to the dings and dongs please? Mine do not work all the time either. My knock is especially the culprit and I have checked everything out in the sounds file and all are working fine. I think its another Yahoo screw up.

MemberLooks like bad coding in Yahoo! Messenger. I don’t use it enough (10 seconds a week?) to notice any problems in it. There is a number of reasons that this could happen, messenger isn’t releasing memory or handles assigned to a sound, or it does and tries to use the sound again and its already gone.
As for going off topic, I just felt an explanation was appropriate as I felt as though I was being told off for expanding on some points.

MemberJust wanted to thank everyone for the tips & suggestions. Here is something I found out by sheer luck. The sounds work perfectly if you have an IMEnvironment running!!! All this time I had the generic white screen & had the problems mentioned above. I loaded an IM & PRESTO… all the sounds work as they should. Seems to me that 1254 has some bugs & they are not ladybugs!!! lol Thanks again everyone.
