It’s been a while since we’ve seen a release from the middle_man guys but, as promised, beta 3 has arrived. To read the official announcement from the creators, head here: Middle_Man :: View topic – Trick or Treat?
In addition to this new release, a new domain name, website, and forum were rolled out a short three months ago. You can check them out at http://www.mymiddleman.com/
The biggest differences between beta 3 and beta 2 of middle_man are that 1) beta 3 is entirely new code built from the ground, up; and 2) AIM 5.9 is fully supported. With this fresh codebase, new capabilities are present in the initial release, version 0.3.0001, with many more features slated to arrive. Full logging capabilities (IMs, chatrooms, buddy events, files received, profiles) are included along with a brand new log viewer. The new log viewer is much more organized than before and boasts the ability to search. The popular request of “ad-removal” and cloning are there, too.
With their new approach towards releasing builds of beta 3–as mentioned in the official announcement–this initial release excludes some features that were present in beta 2. This means that beta 3 will be less feature-filled at first, but will grow with an increasing feature list and increased stability. At this time only AIM version 5.9 is supported, but support for older versions is on the guest list. I’m told that the beta 3 codebase is much closer to how they’ve envisioned the project and allows them to add features much more efficiently than in the past.
