MemberA couple of weeks back there was a lightening storm and during it my computer got powered off because of the electricity temporarily turning off.
So from then I tried to turn my computer on and at first my monitor wouldn’t come on first time around, so I would power off and try again and it would work.
However, now, it takes around 10 times to get it to finally come on and sometimes it will load and do all the stuff it does in dos and then just before the windows loading screen comes on, it’ll sit there doing nothing. So I’ll have to turn it back off again.
The computer loads fine but for some reason it doesn’t seem to pick up the monitor. The light on the front will flash when the computer is not on, and so I can tell when it’s not working because it continues to flash rather than coming on permanently.
Any ideas what might be going on here?
The odd thing is that if it was a physical problem, then why does it come on eventually and work absolutely fine? Like it is now!

MemberI had this problem before, during a lightning storm, exact same problem.
I had to take out my video card, replace it with a new (temporary one) turn the computer on (fully), then off again, then put my video card back in and it worked. I’m like 90% sure it’s your video card and its drivers not working.

MemberDo you reckon there might be a way to deal with the problem without having to open up my computer and put in a new video card (one that I don’t have :-p) ??

There is no such thing as video drivers for the BIOS. Drivers are only required for higher-level operating systems. The card will function in VGA mode until the bootloader starts the OS. If there is a driver problem with windows, you’d want to hit F8 before the boot screen, and enter VGA mode to install/update the video driver.

MemberOk so does that mean it’s a problem with the video card or the drivers or both?!

MemberPhil: If you’re confident enough, open your computer (while it’s off and unplugged), take out the video card (carefully), and turn on the computer. Wait for it to start up as much as it can, then shut your computer off again. Pop your video card back in again, plug everything back in and see if it works.

MemberWell tried that, and it still doesn’t work properly. I’m actually off on holiday tomorrow so won’t be able to reply but will have a look when I’m back in a couple of weeks.
