MemberI recently installed MSN messenger 7 beta on my Windows XP. But when I run it, I can sign in, but then it just freezes, and I have to close it down. I hear this is a common problem with MSN 6 and 7. Anyone know how to fix it?
Thanks

MemberHi lazyturbo 🙂
Yes I have seen this problem before. I will write down some things that fixed it for the people. Let’s hope it does the same for you.
Start with making sure your computer is free of viruses, spyware and adware. First scan your computer for viruses. If you don’t have a virus scanner, you can get AVG for free here. When that is done we are going to find and remove all spyware and adware that is hiding on your computer. To do that you need to install and run Spybot S&D and Lavasoft Ad-Aware.
After that we need to do two more things to make your computer healthy. The first one is get the latest updates and patches from windowsupdate. The second one is defragment your hard disk. When your computer is defragmenting it will put all files in the correct order on your harddisk. This will increase the speed and stabilty of your system alot depinding on how fragmented your harddisks were. To defragment your hard disks first open “My Computer”, then right-click the hard disk you want to defragment, and click “Properties”. On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now. Click Defragment. This may take a while. Repeat these steps for all your hard disks.
Finally make sure you have the latest version of DirectX installed and that your Windows and Internet Explorer are updated to the latest version.
If none worked I think you will have to take a step back and use the latest stable release of MSN Messenger.
Which is MSN Messenger 6.2.Hope this helped!

MemberDid you install the Mess.BE patch?
Cos when I used it my msn 7 latest released did the same. I have to turn off some of the settings on the patch to stop the freeze.March 13, 2005 at 5:34 pm #116670lazyturbo
MemberHow do I know if I installed the Mess.BE patch? I just installled it normally off the site. Does it come standard?
This problem isn’t only with MSN 7, it also does the same thing with MSN 6.2. I followed your instruction Sjoerd, but still it doesnt work 🙁
I’m also behind a router, if that has anything to do with it.

ParticipantDid you uninstall your old version before installing the new one? I usually do that and then use my favorite Reg keys cleanner to make sure the new install won’t be affected.Always work for me!

MemberIm having the same problem with the new version of messenger 7. the beta worked fine but new one freezes. i have gone back to the beta and working ok but there were a few cool things i liked in the official 7 release. i notice some new window pops up when i log in. not sure how to turn that off or if its part of the problem but it looks like it has access to do some of the messenger type stuff from there like check email or interact with buddies. Any help would be appreciated.
