KeymasterMicrosoft is working on MSN Messenger 6.1, and reportedly a beta is due any day now. This article describes what’s new. Check it out and share your comments or updates.

Participanti like the last line of the article – “Basically Microsoft wants full control of Messenger.” Well yeah. What doesn’t Microshaft want full control of? They’ve already got a pretty good monopoly going on computers and software (yeah yeah Macintosh whatever), they can basically say what programs they’ll let us use anyway (example: no more IE after 6.0????), yada yada yada.
as for the new Messenger, I don’t really see most of those new “features” being really necessary. A slideshow? Eh. Tetris ripoff? Eh. “Emoticon factory”???? Why? Aren’t the hundred or so smileys that already exist enough? Who actually USES that many smileys?
I’ll stick with 6.0 thank you very much.

Memberthats true. i dont know anyone who would use a slideshow or whatever, and checkers and all are enough games for me. and for the smileys, they do have enough, there are like no other emotions to show really.

KeymasterPersonally, I’d LIKE to see more games. Why not incorporate any of the two player games available on http://www.zone.com as a start? How about some 3-4 player games?
Also, I like the idea of the slideshow in concept. I think if I’m instant messaging with my mom in San Francisco or my grandma in Carlsbad, and want to share more than a couple pictures it would be cool to do something live. Creative types will probably think of even more uses. David Byrne’s recent article in Wired magazine, Learning to Love Powerpoint. In which he describes his use of Powerpoint as a performance art tool.

Memberyea for real… yall r being really tough on msn messanger. i mean at least they r tryin unlike aol. msn messanger is the best messanger (except for the fact that not to many people use it). I would very much like to see more games (chess would be nice and maybe a LEGAL ad on for game), and a slideshow would be really usefull.

KeymasterUPDATE
6.1 will allow you to turn the tool bar look and change the color of the windows, just like Windows Media Player 9. This will give it a much more “skinned” look-and-feel.September 3, 2003 at 11:31 pm #91068Ice
Memberhopefully they will have fixed the voice convo bug, i still cant get 6.0 to connect and when it does it auto ends the convo. AGH

Memberis there anything known about when it’s supposed to be released?
September 4, 2003 at 1:29 am #91053Jeff Hester
KeymasterThe word on the street was that the BETA version was supposed to be released around the end of August, but as far as I know, the beta testers are still waiting. Since it’s a minor upgrade (not a major point release), the beta test period will probably be pretty short. I’d say the production version will be release by the end of September (barring any unforseen delays).
