ParticipantIt’d be nice to know what your price range is, what you plan to use the computer for, and whether or not you want a laptop or a desktop.

MemberAnd what do you plan on using it for? A gaming machine will require much higher specs than a standard machine used for things like word processing tasks and Internet access.

Participantwell what it would be used for would be nice… and would that be 2000 US dollars or pounds, I saw the comma and that usually is pounds (right?)

MemberI would be using it for Music, IM, Internet, and maybe pictures. Yes that would also be US dollars.

ParticipantDo you want a laptop or desktop, or desktop replacement? Do you want a name brand computer, like the one advertised (HP, Dell, Gateway..) or cheapest price? You want something that won’t need upgrading for awhile?

MemberWas aiming for a Dell. Laptop, Desktop dosn’t matter, Upgrading isn’t that big of a deal beacause its not that hard.
[EDIT] Price isn’t a concern

Participantif you want power, from dell get the XPS, it’s their most powerful, and I beileve they have a laptop too. When you order online you can customize it, to fit your needs. Do you want reccomendations of what to put in it?

ParticipantWell if money isn’t an issue then I would load that sucker up! Put like 4 GB of RAM, a P4 3.8 GHz HT processor, XP pro, 160 GB HD, DVD drive and DVD Burner, I would either put the best video card offered by dell or go integrated and install your own.
That would rack up so dough, but I’d say something reasonable would be 1 GB RAM, P4 GHz HT processor, 80 GB HD, DVD drive and DVD burner.
Do what ever you want, you might want to check out Alienware also, they have some power.

MemberSo i take it Alienware is a computer?
And your specs sound about the same as the ones i had in mind.
June 22, 2005 at 12:23 am #124707DrBroccoli
ParticipantWhat specs, the realist one or the money money ones? Yes Alienware is a brand of computer, good gaming systems, but you won’t be doing much gaming, correct? My computer has about the same specs, only 512 RAM and it does fine, I play game, Sims2 on high and its fine, although I could use a better video card.
