MemberI want to check my understanding, if I use Odigo or Trillian I can contact and be contacted by users of Yahoo, AOL, MSN, and ICQ? I do not have to register with any or all of those services? Trillian supports more services but Odigo is somewhat more stable? It would be nice to know what I’m doing before I start loading software. Not necessary mind you, but nice. What do you say?

MemberI’ve used Trillian but not Odigo, so I’m not sure about Odigo. Trillian connects to Yahoo, AOL, MSN, ICQ, and IRC servers. You can use all or one or as many as you want of them. You can use as many accounts as you want for each server also, all connected simutainously with the same program. Your lists for all of these services are stored in a single buddy list where you can group them however you want.
I hope this helps.March 19, 2002 at 4:36 am #68883Jeff Hester
KeymasterTrue IM interoperability is the holy grail on the instant messaging world… and something we won’t see anytime soon. With TRUE interoperability, you would not have to register with AIM to chat with other AIM users, or MSN just to talk to your co-worker on MSN, etc. You could have one account, and chat with users on other networks.
Sadly, that’s not what we have today.
You can use Trillian to chat with users on all of those systems (AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo and even IRC), but you still need to setup an account with each of those systems.
Fortunately, you don’t need to download the various IM programs to do that. You can setup new accounts right through Trillian!
Odigo is basically the same way, but last time I checked you had to setup your IM accounts first, then you could use them with Odigo (or even uninstall them from your PC).
Does that answer your question?

KeymasterI should add that there are some things you lose when you use Trillian or other IM client instead of the “native” client. Generally the “fancy” features don’t work; things like video and audio, Yahoo’s IMvironments, etc.
For basic chat and even file transfer, Trillian does a fine job. It’s kinda strange. I had reformated one of my computers recently, and other than Windows Messenger (which is built-in to XP) the only messenger software I have installed so far is Trillian.
I still have all the other software programs installed on my desktop (“Sparky”), but haven’t had a real need to installed them on the laptop. And that kind of simplicity is worth something!
