ParticipantWe had some bad rain today and the power went out a few times. While I wasn’t home, it went out and the computer started back up again. Now, for whatever reason, my sound no longer works.
I’m positive it’s my sound card and not the speakers because I plugged in a pair of earphones into the card and still no sound.
Anyone know if it’s fixable or if all else fails how I could possibly roll back to my onboard sound?

KeymasterFirst, power down and do a cold boot. If that doesn’t work, try reseating the audio card. If that doesn’t work, I’d switch to the onboard audio, hopefully configurable through the BIOS when you boot your PC.
And when all else fails, RTFM. 😉

ParticipantCheck the speakers with another device, it’s possible the speakers were hit, and it damaged the output on the soundcard that way.

ParticipantTurns out the outage fried the card. I’m just happy it didn’t trash my $100 Walmart speakers :p
Reinstalled the drivers from my restore CD and switched over the bios setting and onboard is good to go.
Thanks boys 😉

ParticipantAltho this has been resolved wanted to chime in a bit – always worth the extra cost to invest in a nice surge protector and make sure everything is connected to it, including phone and/or ethernet cords. Surprises me the number of people I’ve encountered that don’t connect speakers, Internet cords or other “small” items and pay the cost for it.

ParticipantOdd thing is, everything IS connected to a surge protector. That’s what I found odd about only my sound card getting fried.

ParticipantI second that detn8r! We recently had an outage at work and though I’ve got everything on a decent surge protector – it fried my monitor!
Most surge protectors guarantee protection up to a certain dollar value if you can prove the loss. Although, it’s probably more of hassle than it’s worth to get the money back from them, you can probably look on the mfr. website to check for any warranty yours may have.
I can sympathize with you on this one – we all trust those little power strips we plug things into and it’s such a nasty surprise when they don’t perform as expected.
