MemberWell AOL has put in place new terms of service… They own anything you send over AIM, AOL mail, etc. What about 3rd party applications like Trillian, GAIM, TerraIM, iChat, etc. who connect to the AIM servers? Do the same rules apply?

MemberI read about this. And I’m thinking the rules do apply, even if both people use Trillian, GAIM, etc., since it passes through their servers and stuff.

MemberI read this too. Seems one will have no privacy, the article is here for those who would like to read it all » http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1775649,00.asp

ParticipantHey Josh, I gotta catch a movie with my girlfriend. Give me a call on my cell when you’re available — 999-555-1234.
AOL: OWNED. Sells your phone number to third party companies because AOL now owns you. Perhaps now is the time to switch to another service.

MemberHorrible. Just horrible. I’m telling everybody to ditch AIM, because they can’t do anything right. Bad ISP, bad service, spyware, now this. No privacy.
I hope this doesn’t affect ICQ too, ICQ to ICQ or ICQ to AIMMarch 14, 2005 at 12:57 am #116860ladie_vennom
MemberIt look like it only effects people who have downloaded or registered after feb 5th 2004.
Quote:The following terms and conditions apply to all users who either registered for AIM services or downloaded AIM updates or software on or after February 5, 2004. AIM users who do not register for AIM services or download AIM updates or software on or after February 5, 2004 and are members of the Netscape Network will remain bound by Netscape’s terms and conditions. All other AIM users are bound by the aol.com terms and conditions.so it does effect people who registerd before. or am i reading it wrong?

Participantit is says registered and downloaded updates since Feb. 5, that sucks becuase I had AIM 5.9 long before then but I had to redownload it not too long ago becuase I had tried out palfun and all that.

ParticipantWell sooner or later everybody will be affected by this if they use an older version and update to the newest.Apparently AOL is getting tired of the instant messenger business , and are trying to run all of its customers off to get out.It seem to me like that.

KeymasterWell thank goodness I don’t use AIM anymore. I never liked AOL to begin with. Now with this, the possibility of having the thought of even thinking about liking them has ceased to exist.

KeymasterThis is not what it sounds like on the surface. If you read it carefully, you’ll find that it only applies to information that you’ve posted publicly, in which case there is not expectation of privacy. It’s like what you post here. Everyone can already read it.
March 14, 2005 at 8:44 pm #116861shifter
ParticipantIndeed, it does not apply for user to user conversations. Have a look at this article for more information.
March 14, 2005 at 8:56 pm #116866Kudo
ParticipantAmerica Online spokesman Andrew Weinstein, however, maintained that AOL does not monitor, read or review any user-to-user communication through the AIM network, except in response to a valid legal process.
This will calm down a lot of people that have been worrying about this 😉 thanks for the info shifter 🙂

KeymasterEveryone loves a controversy, and everyone hates big conglomerates that appear to step on the rights of the individual (AOL, Micro$oft, etc.). That’s why these kind of stories spread like wildfire with most people accepting them as truth without question.

ParticipantThe AIM Chief Architect also has something to say on this
