MemberHey there,
I’ve been sent a load of AIM chat logs, though they were made on a mac comouter, and they seem to be in a strange .aim filetype. I can open these with notepad, but the formatting’s a mess, and in AIM the only option to open chat logs is in htm/html files.
So, is there a way to either open them on my windows PC with the original formatting, or just remove the AIM formatting. I could do this last option myself, but there’s 16 files, and it’d just take a while to do it all.
Thanks!

ParticipantWell, I don’t know that this will help you open the files any easier, but here is info on the .aim file extension.
Looks like you should be able to open them with AIM itself according to this, but I’ve never tried looking at AIM chat logs so I don’t have a clue how to go about it.

MemberThanks for the reply, but I’ve tried that, using the ‘open with’ option and pointing it at the AIM exe file, as well as a couple of the others, with no luck.
Looking through the files in notepad, most of the junk at the top and bottom seems to be things like font information. Here’s the top and bottom of one of the ones I opened, though there’s probably not much helpful info here.

Its slightly different with each file, though large parts are still the same. Though the more text there is in the chat log, the more junk there is at the tom/bottom.
Anyway, thanks for the help, I guess I’ll start working on them in notepad.

ParticipantI’m afraid I can’t make heads or tails of all that stuff that opens with the file. I’m sorry. Perhaps there is someone more familiar with AIM logs that will reply.
Did you try opening it in a browser window? I’m fairly sure it will not open but it might be worth a try.

MemberYeah, I have, it just looks exactly the same as when I open it in notepad.
Thanks for the help so far.

MemberWhat version of AIM were you using when those cat logs were taken?

Memberuse Marco Pontello’s Home – Software – TrID (if using windows)
try the file utility (http://unixhelp.ed.ac.uk/CGI/man-cgi?file) on unix like operating systems
maybe it will determine your file type.March 22, 2009 at 7:05 am #173966Jon8RFC
MemberIt’s hard to say since notepad has a VERY limited character set, AND, I’m not confident that all of us are even viewing the same set of data when we look at it through a webpage. Since it’s copied and pasted to the forum, processed and saved on the forum, then viewed by a browser (which isn’t good at viewing raw file data), it could have gotten changed along the way.
If I could look at the actual data myself, I might figure out something. I’m a retired BBB Staff member and contributed a lot in the AIM and Computer support forum sections…mostly in AIM though.
