KeymasterYou want smileys? If you’re running AIM 5.0 or higher, you got’em. Check out BigBlueBall Smiler for the easiest way to insert them in your AIM instant messages.
Many thanks to Paul P. for reporting three bugs that we promptly squashed. Cheers, mate! π
If you have any suggestions for improving Smiler, questions about how to use it, or discover any new smileys to add to it, post’em here!

MemberIt’s been awhile since I last used AIM because of Trillian, but does the person that I’m talking to must also have this to see them?

As long as they’re also running AIM 5.x, they’ll also see these. There’s nothing to install. Cool, eh? π
Sometimes I’ve seen them show up as the ASCII smiley for a moment, then they show the graphic, so it appears that each resource isn’t actually installed until the first time it’s used.

KeymasterSome people have reported problems with the smileys not showing up. Usually this can be cleared up by closing that IM window and starting a new one, then sending the smiley code again. The good news is that once the smiley is sent properly, it seems to work consistently from then on.

MemberThe Christmas tree icons don’t seem to have hyperlinks, (ie, you cannot click on them and get the code in the window that will allow you to copy to the clipboard).

Thanks for catching that bug, Shodges! It’s fixed now, so the next time you use Smiler it the Christmas tree smileys should work fine.

MemberThe Icon right after the lightbulb icon doesn’t work because you had to put a ‘2’ after the ‘AgHStI’ it should be: “AgHSEtI” but I know you had to program it the way you did because there is also a “AgHSETI” that is the Hand. So the Map, and the GIF need to be AgHSeti2, but the Javascript “emo” code needs to be “AgHSEtI”

MemberThere are also some icons that CONSISTENTLY do NOT show up for me, after numerous window opens and closes, reboots, different machines, etc. they are:
π
π
π
πThose are the only 4, do they show up for you? (if so, then I won’t worry, I’ll just keep trying them until I can get them to show up

Fantastic! I’ve fixed it, so now the monitor smiley works.

I’ve also checked these out and found the following:
- π works fine and inserts from this set

- π was wrong. It should have been AgHSG/s. This has been fixed and now inserts from this set

- π works fine and inserts from this set

- π works fine and inserts from this set

Thanks for reporting the bugs. On the other ones, try closing your IM window and opening a new one. Usually after a few tries it will start showing up. Once it shows up, it sticks around. π

MemberWell, I found out where AIM reads the smiley sets from:
(either windows, or Documents and settingsusername)APPLICATION DATAAIMBARTCACHE1024If you open up one of these files in Notepad you will see which Smiley Set it refers to, for example: 0201D21F65 shows: snowman01.gif which gets referenced when I paste: π into the browser. (but for some reason the snowman still isn’t showing up for me π even though I have the file and I see AIM reading it. Anyway, this is just informational for all of you that wonder where AIM is reading from/writing to when you see these NEW SMILEY SETS!!!
SMILER ROCKS!!! Thanks!

Try closing the IM window, reopening and pasting the smiley again. Repeat several times. I’m not sure why, but sometimes this clears up the problem.
Is anyone else running Smiler on Windows 2000? If so, could you confirm if it works (or not)?
