MemberWhen I first found about AIM Addons I thought, “Well that is a good idea. There are some things that bug me about AIM and some things I’d like added in.” So I searched around. I tried DeadAIM, Middle:Man, and such, but then came across Palfun. It had most of the options of other ones, while still have unique options.
This was a few years back when I downloaded it, and I still use it now.
I posted here awhile back when a fellow member from the palfun forum was asking about what happened with the site. It’s been down for quite a while, it came back up though, and died again.
I doubt it will come back.
However, I came back here thinking about Palfun. Maybe I’d find some other people from the forum here.
And you know what I find when I run a search? I find several people saying that it’s loaded with spyware and that its just a rip of AiMutation.
That is just plain insulting to the people who worked hard on that project, to give people a FREE, well working, and unique AIM Addon.
As I’ve said before, I’ve used this program for quite awhile. On several computers, and reccomend it to my friends. I have never had any spyware problems. I keep programs like Adaware fully updated, and nothing. Even after installing I get nothing. There is no spyware. That is a joke. AIM is loaded with spyware, not Palfun.
On the rip thing, I would have to go with Basilisk’s answer on this forum:
“If you say this, please provide more information, not only “I haven’t seen this program before release of AIMutation source code!”. The skin engine (main reason of this rumors) is NOT based on AIMutation skins, and NO AImutation code is used to develop this project. By the way, public release of AIMutation source code was on Feb-6 and AIM-Plus 6.2 (this is not first release, first release with skinning was made in December 2003) was released Feb-10. Do you think we have enough time to steal/modify/rip/rebuild AIMutation source code and add several our own original features?”
Palfun is one of the best free addons out there. Maybe even the best. I’ve never had a problem with it.
I figure since I’ve used it for such a long time, and no one is left to defend it, I should. The project may be dead, but the program is still one of the best, and should be treated that way.
However, it wouldn’t be fair to just promote it and thats all. There are a few bugs that may be annoying for some people:Profiles can’t be changed. However you can always type up the profile in Palfun’s profile editor and then copy it all and sign on AIM, then change it. It takes less than a minute and its not a very taxing thing unless you change your profile every 5 minutes.
Chat is not allowed. But who really uses chat? Its full of those annoying bots spamming porn. No big loss.
Skins have some bugs for some people. If you get a system running low on resources or some crap like that and Palfun closes, its due to the skin. This is because of the embraces and such, which are put over windows’ theme. I like skins, I’ve made a few. But I don’t care enough about them to have AIM crash every 45 minutes. It hasn’t happened to many people anyhow.
I really just don’t think its been given a very fair image here. However I’m not going to argue to the death. If you are one of those people bitching about it, but haven’t tried it (and I’m sure about 95% of those who have bitched haven’t tried it.), you might want to. But if you don’t, whatever, not my problem. If you have any questions about it, I’ll be glad to help out.
The last version (6.6.5) can be downloaded here (Unfortunately I don’t know how well that will work out, because the file isn’t available elsewhere and is on my crappy file hosting thing.)
The extensions: extra smileys and Hider can be downloaded in a .zip attached.
Its no Messenger:Mate, but it is free. Try it.
AIM Version: 5.9.3690 is probably best choice.
Maybe I’ll get some people to try it. If not, then oh well. Just sticking up for something good.

MemberWhile I was having trouble with AIMutation, I read your post about Palfun and I decided to give it a try. I love it!! It’s easy to use and I really like the features, especially how you can change the color of your buddy’s name in the buddy list.
The website isn’t working so I simply went to download.com and searched for palfun.
I just wanted to let you know I appreciate it and I do like it better than the many other add-ons I’ve tried. Thanks for recommending it!:D

MemberI totally disagree. I’m a beloved member of AIMutation. Maurizio, the person who created the Aimutation skinning engine took a look at palfun, and concluded that it did use AIMutation source code (because of nuiances of the workings of the engine). And once when I used Palfun my Windows Anti-Spyware detected Palfun as a spyware threat.

MemberAs the website you mentioned said palfun is a rip off of AIMutation. It’s pretty much exactly the same.

Memberi don’t believe this is a battle of the add-ons… it is really not a big deal. everyone has a different opinio; mine being- i refuse to pay for aim add-ons because i think it’s a waste of money. i’m glad palfun is free and fun, that’s all.

Do you go to the movies and refuse to pay $10 for 2 hours inside a dark room with a bunch of other people?

MemberIt’s sad that people will actually look down on you for not wanting to/not being able to pay for an addon to an already free program.
