Are there any games that you can buy at the store that you don’t have to pay a subscription fee to play with others online?
Games like Mechwarrior, Homeworld, Ultima, etc. Not cards, checkers and such.;)Yep. Here are a few:
- Age of Empires – This is a multiplayer strategy game that’s been around for a while, but can be very addictive.
- Diablo II – An RPG. Not massively multi-player, but you can play in a group. It’s also been around for a while.
- Warcraft II allows up to 8 players to compete over Battle.net for free. For similar, but futuristic gameplay, see Starcraft
- Unreal Tournament, a first-person shooter that supports free-for-all or team play in a variety of modes. This is one of my favorites, because the action is fast and adrenaline-packed, and the games don’t last all night.
- Counter-Strike is another first-person shooter, but requires more strategy and team work to do well. It’s a more “realistic” shooter.
- Midtown Madness is probably my all-time favorite driving game. You can race online or play any of a number of creative variants. There are a number of driving/racing games that allow free multi-player gameplay.
There are many more, but these are some that I like. All of them are commercial programs that you’ll have to buy, but there is no recurring cost to play.
One final note, on almost all of the Internet games I mentioned above, your connection speed can make a big difference in performance. Usually the people with the faster connections have an advantage, so try to find people with comparable connections to your own.
