MemberPlease can anyone help me? I have been very diligant with spybot, adaware, and hijack this, and am pretty sure i am clean. I have NO problems with anything on my computer right now. I never used Yahoo Messenger before, and finally installed it. When it is open, it will sometimes randomly restart. No shutdown, no time, a complete restart, as if you flipped the power switch on the surge protector. If i try to ‘sign out’ of yahoo at any time, or if i try to just exit yahoo messenger, and also, if i select close application from the task manager, the computer will instantly restart, again, no shut down, no slow down, no logging out, no saving anything, it instantly restarts. It NEVER does this for any other software, never happened before i installed yahoo, and now it wont go away. I could uninstall yahoo but i finally installed it as my coworkers use it to communicate from various locations. I know not exactly professional, but its the reality of the situation. I’ve tried to uninstall Java, Yahoo, and reinstall older versions of each, in various combinations on one, then the other, and it is definately Yahoo Messenger that does it. I am at my wits end. The random restarts are the worst as i loose things like browsing history in my IE session, any documents i had open. I am running windows 2000. Please, i can not find anything online about this either. “computer restarts” “yahoo messenger” windows 2000 typed in google is tons of normal spyware results with hijackthis logs listing ‘yahoo’ nothing specific to my problem.
Please, can anyone help? i didnt see anything on this happening on the yahoo support pages either.
Thank you anyone

ParticipantCould be a an error on your system that calling a remote procedure call like the blaster worm did…
go to run and type in services.msc and press enter
on the services window that opens look for Remote Procedure call (RPC)
right click it and go to properties
Go to Recovery Tab check the actions taken by your pc on a error, change them to take no action and apply it then reboot, and see if it still has your pc rebooting.
if it it is still rebooting change your rpc back to what it was and it must be something else.

MemberAll recovery tab options are set to “take no action” — i know i cant quite explain what is happening, but the computer is NOT restarting, it is not shutting down, it is not going through anything like that. It is an instant off right then and there. No thinking about it, no slowing down, no shut-down proceedure started. It is instantly at the blank Bios starting screen, as if you had a split second power outage. And it really is as if the power stops because it starts over suddenly from the memory scan. If you restart your computer, it pops up the ram memory count, it doesnt scan through it again like a fresh power on. This DOES rescan the memory too, just like a power off-power on. And– it sounds terrible, almost like a star wars gun sound, very very faint mind you, but a very electric type sound in the power box/motherboard area like when you do power off, that weird sound an old crt monitor makes. Its not a physical problem either as i’ve just recently replaced my power supply with a top-o-the line one, and never had problems before or with anything other than the yahoo one.
Hope any of this extra info can help someone figure out a solution for me!!

MemberWell, what version of Yahoo! Messenger are you using? Have you tried a complete clean install of it? Also, another possibility that comes to mind is a software conflict with something that’s running. You said you use HijackThis, can you possibly post a log here?

MemberAlright, I want you to try something. Let’s try a clean install of Yahoo! Messenger and see if it makes any difference…
Instructions:
1) Download Dermot’s handy Y!Remover tool, and run it to remove all traces of Yahoo! Messenger (backing up any archives you wish to save first, if you keep archives).
2) Reboot your computer.
2) Download the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger from here and install it and see if it crashes.
Keep us informed! 🙂

Memberbut actually it restarted quickly this time, once before i logged in, then again like 10 minutes after i started it. I have it running now, and its been at least 10-20 minutes without problem, but i dont know if its same or worse with this newest version. (i think its same version I had though)
Also, dont know if this is actually happening or not, but, it SEEMS like if i do nothing, or am away from my computer, it will restart quickly. Where as if i am surfing the net, typing something, or even playing solitaire, it will take a good 45 min to an hour or longer to restart. Like, i have once left a mpg video file playing and it will play through at least a couple times before it decides to restart where if it is still, nothing happening, although like word or IE or something can be open and doesnt matter, it will restart somewhere between like 5 minutes and an hour. No written time record to know if this is fact or just seems like its the case. And i dont mean it will be locked up or restarting for that long, i just mean it works fine before it suddenly, for no reason, restarts.
So far, i’ve spent about 10-15 minutes typing this though, took a phone call in the middle, and its still here, not restarted yet. But it has twice already since i reinstalled yahoo.
thanks

MemberIf it happens with other programs, that tells me there is a possible problem with your CPU overheating (or the CPU fan is broken), or a memory stick is messed up.
February 26, 2007 at 5:27 pm #158598wlpywd
Memberwell thats just it, it doesn’t happen with other programs. If yahoo is not started, it never happens. never. I don’t even get random shut-downs, i try to keep my system pretty clean. I am 100% positive its some conflict caused by yahoo messenger.

MemberI have two suggestions:
1. Search Microsoft’s Knowledge Base to see if you can find a solution. You can find that database listed under Support at microsoft.com
2. Messenger may be using Internet Explorer. Are you running IE7? It may have been automatically updated. A lot of people are reporting problems with IE7. Before reverting back to IE6 by uninstalling IE7, download another browser to be used as a backup in case the uninstall has problems.
