MemberMy friend started having this problem today. When he starts up windows, all pop-up ads keep apearing on his screen and he doesn’t even have a browser open. I told him to use Ad-aware which he did and that got rid of a lot of spyware. I also told him to get a popup blocker and run a virus scan. He did all that and he still gets the ads aprearing. Does anyone know what else can be done?
He’s using Windows 98..and hes running a cable modem.

MemberSame thing happens to me sometimes when pop-up programs run on startup. Tell your friend to go to Start > Run > type in Msconfig and go to the Startup tab. There you will see all the programs that load on startup, and you’ll probably recognize the ones that don’t belong by their names, or their directories.

ParticipantVirus Scanners do not pick up spyware. And removing them from start up, doesnt help either. Tell them to download and install SpyBot Search & Destroy and Adaware both of which can be found using your search engine for free.

Yeah!!, he can stop visiting porn sites for a start.. these pop-ups are placed into the browser start-up and will ‘pop up’ even before the browser is started, they are in fact imbedded into the registry and run after the computer is switched on.
They are usually placed there after visiting porn sites or similar. Only thru understanding just what you are clicking on and where you are on the web will you avoid these sites.November 17, 2003 at 4:12 pm #53347magistyk
MemberRustedtight, in no way can you assume that her friend was visiting porn sites? Where in the world have you come up with that assumption? I have also had such things happened to me from many sites that are not porn. A lot of times you will need to run Ad Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy. If this is not the way, often the sites that install these ads without your knowledge have a FAQ page that supplies you with an uninstaller.

MemberI agree with Magistyk. Rustedtight, if you have nothing that can help ladie_vennom, might as well not say anything at all. Your a moderator, so stop insulting people in forums, and try to actually help the people in these forums.
If Ad-aware doesnt work, worst case scenario is having to go into Regedit yourself and try to see what software doesnt belong. If you know that name of the company thats making the pop-ups, you can probably search for it in Regedit (ctrl+f)

MemberJust wanted to let u all know, my friend stopped getting pop-ups. Using Adaware and removing them from starup did actually help. So thanks to all for your suggestions. Also my friend does not visit porn sites and most of the popups were from poetry.com and sites that have nothing to do with porn.
