MemberI believe that I have some useful things to post and the one-minute time interval is a bit too long! Maybe 20 or 25 seconds would be better; that’s what I have it set to on my board.

Anything you can type in under 30sec’s probably isn’t that useful. I vote to keep the limit in place, it helps to prevent a large amount of spam.

That has nothing to do with it, this flood feature blocks a TON of spam.

MemberI think he meant more along the lines of “useless postings”. We’ve had a lot of problems in the past with people trying to boost their post count by posting a lot of, well… junk.

MemberI recommend to increase it to 5 minutes, so people actually bother to read the whole topic before posting something. This will help decrease the “one-liners” which are posted everywhere. 😉
Well, that was a bit of humour, but quite honestly I do believe that it should stay as it is. One minute is nothing compared to the amount of time you’d actually spend on reading the topic and then typing a useful not so little reply. 🙂

I posted that “one-liner” to make a point. It’s true that you can post more than one of those one-line replies in a single minute, but so what?! It’s basically (as DJ and others pointed out) a wasted post. So I agreed with Faizan and David. Whoop-de-doo! What exactly does that mean? Why do I agree? What do I think the right answer is? You, the reader, have no clue because I didn’t take the time to write it down and share it.
Posting a quality, well-thought out reply normally takes time. That’s not to say that every post needs to run on and on, but that if there isn’t much meat to the reply, it probably doesn’t have a lot of value.
Now sometimes that’s ok, particularly in the off-topic areas where things are more casual, almost like a chat room at times. But in the core forums, I’d prefer that people post thoughtful, well-written replies that can actually help not only the original poster, but the thousands of other people that come along and read the discussion later.
That’s my gripe for the day. When you say something in a chat room, it essentially is like vapor–it disappears into nothingness moments later, never to be seen again (nevermind any logging functionality). A forum, on the other hand, is at least semi-permanent. What you say in a forum discussion stays there and is ready by hundreds or even thousands of other people. It carries more weight than a chat session, and should be treated as such.
And Shadowcrest, this diatribe isn’t directed at you, but toward the many people who come here and post nonsensical replies that add no value (and often do so in strafe mode).
A good post should make you think, or help you learn, or do something worthwhile. It might piss you off, but not because it was a waste of bits and bytes. Most importantly, a good post almost always takes more than one minute to write.

Yes. It’s not five minutes, nor will it ever be five minutes. Faizan was being a little facetious, but the main point he was making was dead-on: we don’t need to decrease it from it’s current setting.
