Computer Configuration/Admistrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Messenger then alter the settings in the right paneIf u have Windows xp Home edition then download this file:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_messenger_autorun.vbs
Download xp_messenger_autorun.vbs and save this file to your hard drive.
Navigate to where you saved it and double click the file.
A confirmation dialog will appear and remind you to log off/back

To prevent Windows Messenger from signing in when you run Outlook Express
In Outlook Express, click Options on the Tools menu.
On the General tab, click to clear the Automatically log on to Windows Messenger check box.

All this time I’ve been a part of the MSN Messenger community, one of the most asked questions is “How do I remove Windows Messenger from Windows XP”.
Most people tell you to do this:

Luckily there is an alternative. Instead of uninstalling Windows Messenger, you should hide it. The only way I know of so far would be to use an application and thanks to CookieRevised (a m8 of mine), I now know of the program.

You can actually remove Windows Messenger by following the steps below, I did it and it didn’t seem to make my Outlook express lag.
On XP Systems without SP1:
Click Start – Run, then type the following:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%INFmsmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Press ENTER
Restart WindowsOn XP Systems WITH SP 1:
– Control Panel
– Add / Remove Programs
– Click on “Add/Remove Windows Components” on the left
– Un-check “Windows Messenger”
– Click “NEXT”
– Click “Finish”
– Reboot
