Problem with offline messages

In the past, if I received offline messages, they would pop up when I sign on. However, this past week I have gotten several messages like this:

You just received 2 IM(s) while you were offline. If you do not wish to receive offline messages, please go to IM Settings

I do not receive the actual offline messages though. I do not use grouped im’s and someone said that could be the problem. I have no desire whatsoever to use grouped im’s, so does anyone else have any ideas?
