MemberTry ZoneAlarm, the free version, unless you want to pay for, ‘enhanced security features’. I’ve used ZA for a while now and its never caused me any problems, its easy to set up and give various programs permission to access the Internet. It can be downloaded from here:

MemberInstall a wireless router and beam internet access to other computers in your house. The router has its own inbuilt firewall.

MemberTrue, but doesn’t that have cost disadvantages? Of course, there are other firewalls out there aside from Zone Alarm, I just suggested it because its what I use. Try them out and see which is the best one for you.

MemberI think people that are good enough w/ computers can send viruses knowing your ip address. One time I sent someone I didn’t know afile over MSN and it used to show your ip address on the other person’s comuter when you were sending a file to them (don’t know if it does anymore) but like 2 min later I got a blue screen and everytime I went to restart my computer it froze.

MemberPeople who know your IP address cannot do anything if you are safe. If you are behind a good firewall or NAT, they cannot do anything. All of you are overreacting. Trickmaster: That was likely a coincidence. Do you have any idea how using an IP address to connect works? The only way a person can send viruses using an IP address is if your OS is left unpatched and a port responds to a vulnerability. If not, a trojan opens ports to your system for a hacker to get into. The IP address really plays minimal role. It just identifies your computer on a network (this case the Internet).
Don’t worry, no hacker wants to target you…the most they can do with an IP address is find out the location you are dialing into (ISP office) or are directly connected to (ISP office) or your ISP company. They in theory could launch a DDOS attack on you, but nobody cares about end users like that. Quit worrying, who cares if someone knows your IP?
OMG OMG my IP is 68.46.190.236 …..NOOOOOOOOO
Ready for a horror story…every mod here…every website admin…and every place you download from or connect to can see your IP. Your instant messenger, they can see it too…[twilight zone theme]
EDIT: corrected a typo
