There’s a service at AI-Buddy that I used that allowed me to be online (with an away message) when my computer was powered off, and while i’d like to continue using it, my trial is up, and I’m not going to pay money for only using a single feature on their website. What my question is, if I get some webspace or something, is there a way I could do this myself?
Any help would be appreciated.

No, it’s not that easy. You need to have an application running on a computer somewhere. The AI-Buddy.com website is not just some html, it must’ve got applications supporting it, else it can never do the things it does now. Either way, you would need to know a fair bit of programming to create this. It’d be easier to just leave your PC on. =)
http://www.imforwards.com is a site that allows this. My friend uses it and says you can get IM’s fowarded to a cell phone (like IM forwarding), e-mail, their site OR none.
